Thanksgiving is coming up! This season is all about spending time with family and friends, getting a break from school and work, and taking time for self care. Whether you look forward to Thanksgiving dinner or dread it, we all have strong opinions about the food on the table. Here’s what your favorite Thanksgiving dish says about your personality:
Turkey
You’re a traditionalist! You like the classics! You probably have been told on many occasions that you’re an “old soul.” You might even be known to enjoy vintage movies, old music, and have an impressive amount of knowledge about random history facts. If your favorite thing on the Thanksgiving table is the turkey, there’s a good chance you cooked most of the meal yourself. You started brining the turkey about 3 days ago, but you’ve been planning the whole menu for weeks. Your love language is probably acts of service, and you love bringing people together on Thanksgiving with good food. Just don’t let all your preparation and work get in the way of you actually enjoying the holiday.
Mashed Potatoes
Literally everyone is in love with you. You’re effortlessly charming, have a naturally flirty personality, and are an amazing conversationalist. You’re definitely the type of person people want to bring home to their parents. It’s easy for you to fit in pretty much anywhere, just like how mashed potatoes go with a wide variety of meals. But, because you’re so well-liked, when someone doesn’t click with you, you take it really personally. As much as you may pretend otherwise, people’s opinions matter a lot to you, and you might feel pressured to uphold a certain image rather than be authentic. Try to focus on the tons of people who do like you, rather than fixating on the criticisms of the people who don’t.
Cranberry Sauce (in a can)
You’re a simple, no-frills type of person. Cracking open a can, slapping its contents on a plate, and slicing it up—that’s about as fancy as you get. Nobody could ever accuse you of being a snob. You don’t like to make a big deal about things, and you avoid confrontation like the plague. Because you’re so laid back, it might be hard for people to know where they stand with you. You’re not overly affectionate and you tend to keep your thoughts to yourself, so nobody knows what’s going on beneath the surface. There’s nothing wrong with staying neutral, just remember to tell the people in your life that you love and appreciate them so they’re not left guessing.
Cranberry Sauce (whole berry)
You are a wild card. I sense that you’re very eccentric in your personal style and taste.
You probably have a mysterious tattoo that everyone asks you about, and you never step out of the house without a carefully planned outfit. Your fatal flaw is hipster syndrome—but it’s not your fault, because you actually did like everything before it was cool. If you were helping to host Thanksgiving this year, you were the person that got put in charge of creating the atmosphere, down to the playlist and the perfectly coordinated centerpieces. Your eye for aesthetics is simply unmatched—but you don’t have to take everything so seriously! Like, it’s okay to wear sweatpants sometimes. I won’t tell.
Mac and Cheese
Part of me didn’t want to include mac and cheese in this list, because I don’t really consider it a Thanksgiving-specific food. But, most of us have it on the Thanksgiving table. For that reason, I’m going to guess that if this is your favorite dish, Thanksgiving isn’t a very big deal to you. Either you feel neutral about the holiday itself, or you find it problematic and you just can’t enjoy it. You’re definitely the person that’s instigating political arguments at the dinner table for fun. You have strong moral principles that you always stick to, and you’re the first to defend someone who needs it. You may come off intimidating when people first meet you, but secretly, you’re a big softy. Don’t forget to take a day off from saving the world every once in a while.
Green Bean Casserole
You’re a performer. You’re most likely using the Thanksgiving meal as an opportunity to test out new comedic material on your family and friends, which they’re probably used to. This is a fan-favorite dish, so you’re easy to get along with and thrive in large groups where you can be the center of attention. You’ve always been the entertainer of your family and friend groups, but are you using humor as a shield? You’re the one who’s making everyone laugh, but because you’re constantly “on,” you don’t always give people the chance to get close to you. Even though you’re hilarious, there’s so much more to you than just jokes! Try being vulnerable with people sometimes; I promise you won’t scare them off.
Bread/Rolls
If bread is your favorite thing on the table, you’re probably a picky eater. Bread rolls are reliable and predictable, just like you—in a good way! You don’t like to make a fuss, so you’re probably gonna eat mostly bread during dinner and not complain about it. You’re the person your friends call when they need advice, you’re always on time, and you stick to your routines. This makes you a great person to be friends with, but can sometimes stop you from taking risks or being spontaneous. You have a really hard time being flexible, and you always need to have a detailed plan before doing anything. Try branching out, maybe reach for other things on the table once in a while. You might be surprised by what you find.
Sweet Potatoes
You’re a hopeless romantic. You’ve seen every rom-com on Netflix, and totally believe in love at first sight. You probably have a new crush every other week, but you’re way too shy to actually pursue any of them. People get amazing vibes from you the second they meet you, and you’re great to confide in because you never judge. I feel like you’ve made more than a few mix CD’s in your life. It’s great to have an active imagination, but don’t let your fantasy life get in the way of making real-life connections. And, remember to put yourself out there! There’s a lot to like when people get to know you.
Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows
You are loud. And you probably have a major sweet tooth. Some people may judge you for liking this combination, but you don’t care. Your inner child rules your life, so you tend to act on impulse which makes you fun to celebrate with, but people may be wary of how chaotic you are. Because this is such a polarizing dish, I feel like you have very strong opinions and are ready to voice them at any given moment. Because some people think your taste is questionable—vegetables with marshmallows?—you might feel the need to be the loudest in the room to make up for it. You bring a ton of energy to every holiday, but don’t forget to listen and take some quiet moments to reflect.
Gravy
You are a sauce-oriented person. For you, the most important part of any meal is the sauce. I also sense that if gravy is your favorite thing on the table you’re putting it on everything, not just the turkey and potatoes: it’s probably covering your whole plate. Good for you. You’re a fun-loving person who needs a lot of variety in your life, so you’re not afraid to take risks. You’d probably be the first person to suggest skydiving or scuba diving or some other crazy adventure. It’s really hard to match your energy, so I’d guess that you have a close circle of friends and don’t tend to stray from them. You know what you like, and you shouldn’t let the opinions of others bring you down. Always having to defend your decisions might make you a little defensive, but remember not to shut out the people who have your back.
Stuffing
You are definitely the mom of your friend group. You probably always have snacks and tissues in your bag, and you comfort drunk girls in the bathroom at bars. Like you, stuffing is comforting, consistent, and warm. You are a born nurturer and you act selflessly out of love for others. Because you like to take care of everyone else, you probably don’t take care of yourself as much as you should. It probably feels like everything would fall apart without you! Another similarity to stuffing—you tend to hold things together without getting much of the credit. Remember you don’t need to take on everybody’s problems, and it’s okay to let people handle some things on their own! I hope you take this holiday season to focus on recharging. Maybe hit the spa.
Brussels Sprouts
You may be a vegan. Extra points if you’re a vegan in a family of hardcore non-vegans, and this was the only thing on the table you could eat, because I refuse to believe that brussels sprouts are your favorite dish by choice. If they are, you probably have a recipe you swear by, and are definitely spending the whole dinner convincing your friends and family to give it a try. This speaks to how open minded you are. I think you’re a very understanding person who’s always willing to give second chances—and third and fourth. Your patience is a virtue, and like brussels sprouts, you may get unfairly overlooked. Also like brussels sprouts, people are usually pleasantly surprised by you.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
