Ashley Jurus, HCE President & Co-Campus Correspondent: I will never be able to choose a favorite romantic comedy. It’s my favorite genre. Whenever I’m looking for a new movie to watch, I scrolled the Netflix Romance category and hardly see any new titles. But, one of my favorites will always be How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Honestly, this movie has everything. Two beautiful leads, hilarious jokes, friendships, and everyone’s dream job. If you’re looking for a romance based on the early 2000’s, this is for you!

Kenzie Moore, Senior Editor & Co-Campus Correspondent: Unfortunately, rom-coms aren’t really my forte, I’m more of a psychological thriller kind of gal. However, there is one particular rom-com that never fails to get me laughing, and it has one of those storylines you just never forget. My all-time favorite rom-com is 110%, Adam Sandler’s 50 First Dates. Not I get it, most of Sandler’s work is subpar at best, but he has his moments! In this heartbreakingly hilarious film,  Drew Barrymore is an absolute vision, and if you’re into that kind of slapstick raunchy comedy, this movie will be a perfect edition to your Valentine’s Day!

Hannah Lynam, Vice President: Romantic comedies are some of my all time favorite movies to watch. It started when I was younger when my mom introduced me to Sleepless in Seattle. While that definitely is one of my favorites, my recent favorite is Crazy Rich Asians! It’s such an adorable cast who can make you laugh, and cry, throughout the entire movie. There are a few romances throughout the film, but my personal favorite is between Nick Young and Rachel Chu. Their relationship goes through so many battles when she meets his family, but true love wins in the end.

Elise Kline, Secretary: I am a complete and utter rom-com enthusiast. So, needless to say, deciding on one favorite romantic comedy seems nearly impossible to me. However, I will say that I’m a total sucker for the 1980’s classics. There are so many awesome choices from this to choose from this period, including Dirty Dancing, Grease, and of course The Princess Bride. But Sixteen Candles in particular is one of my all-time favorites, and it’s my recommendation to you this upcoming Valentine’s week. This film is full of laughter and good old-fashioned romance. The final scene never fails to leave me swooning, and the combination of the incredible feel-good song “If You Were Here” by the Thompson Twins is essentially perfection. It’s truly an iconic rom-com, and if you haven’t seen it, definitely add it to your must-watch list!

Melanie Albright, Social Media: Rom coms are my jam, 90% of the time that I’m watching a movie it will be a rom-com. Case and point, my senior capstone is centered around one. My absolute favorite one is Letters to Juliet. Starring Amanda Seyfried, in my opinion a rom-com goddess, who makes every film she’s in better. This movie is amazing and follows Sophie, who goes across the world with her chef fiance on a pre-honeymoon to Verona Italy. While there, she visits Juliet’s house and finds a letter that was written 50 years ago asking Juliet’s advice! The movie follows Sophie as she meets the writer of the letter, Claire, and her grandson Charlie. Together they travel the Tuscan countryside looking for Claire’s long lost love.

Amanda Perez, Writer: I am a hopeless romantic, so you can imagine how many rom-coms I’ve watched. However, My personal favorite is Ten Things I Hate About You. All I need to mention is that Heath Ledger to wheel you in. My professor once said, “I don’t care. If you are breathing, you would make out with Heath Ledger”. Heath, who’s character name is Patrick, brings that total bad boy vibe, which is something I think we can all appreciate. He gets payed to ask this girl, Kat, out on some dates and eventually to the Prom. Why does someone pay for Patrick to take Kat to the Prom? Well Kay’s sister, Bianca, wants to go to the prom, but her Dad said she can only go if Kat goes. Now this all sounds simple right, any girl would love to go to a prom and get asked out by a total hottie? Not Kat, and that’s what makes this rom-com like no other. Watch Patrick try to win stubborn, outsider Kat’s heart. Who knows, maybe it will end disastrously or maybe it brings two misunderstood people together in a perfect unison.

Vanessa Combs, Writer: I’ve never loved a genre more than rom-coms. They’re feel good movies, that make you laugh endlessly while giving you hope that there’s love out there for everyone. Ironically, my all-time favorite would have to be Valentines Day. The film features an ensemble cast led by Patrick Dempsey, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, and Anne Hathaway, need I say more? As the holiday unfolds, nearly two dozen people experience first dates, longtime commitments, old school crushes and connections to old flames all in a matter of 24 hours. If that wasn’t enough to draw you in, the soundtrack includes the likes of Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Amy Winehouse. Now kick back, relax, and indulge in this icon of a rom-com.

Madison Daigle, Treasurer: Although the list of my favorite rom-coms is endless, I have to say that, if Colin Firth is in it, it will be on the top of my list. There’s Mama Mia, all of the Bridget Jones’s Diary movies, but the top of the list is Love, Actually. Hugh Grant is dreamy and his love story with Natalie is so beautiful. Liam Neeson helping his son find love (the infamous running through the airport scene), leaves him with the title of best dad in this movie. Alan Richman is an a-hole but he was incredible in the role. And let’s not forget about Andrew Lincoln and the card scene, it was hella romantic, I don’t care if you think it was creepy. But by and large the end scene between Colin Firth and Aurelia is the reason this is my favorite movie. He learned portuguese for her and she learned english for him, be still my beating heart, that’s true love right there. This chokes me up everytime. Please go watch my favorite rom-com, I hope you fall in love with Colin Firth like I did.

Victoria Harding, Events Coordinator: A better question is what romantic comedy don’t I like? I love When Harry Met Sally, a story about two people that fate can’t keep apart! It really captures an imperfect relationship that develops throughout the chapters of both characters’ lives, from right after college to years later. I’m also a sucker for any storyline where two people start out as friends and eventually become more, and this theme is a huge focus in the movie. In fact, they spend a lot of the movie trying to maintain a platonic friendship just to prove a point! If you aren’t a big romantic comedy fan, the Big Mouth Valentine’s Day special is a bit of a spin-off of this movie!
