Are Eyelash Extensions Right for You?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

So, you’ve wanted eyelash extensions forever, but you’re just not sure if its the right move for you. There are several pros and cons to eyelash extensions, as well as some common misconceptions. I’m here to give you the full rundown of eyelash extensions so you can decide if they’re right for you.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are exactly how they sound-extensions. I’ve heard a few misconceptions that they are inserted in between each eyelash and glued directly to your eyelid, which is incorrect. An individual fake eyelash is glued to the end of each and every one of your lashes, making them look fuller and longer.

Myth #1: Getting eyelash extensions hurts!

Getting extensions in completely painless! In fact, it’s more likely that you’ll fall right asleep during the whole process. I personally find it very relaxing.

Myth #2: The lashes will fall off if they get wet.

This is completely false. Take a long hot shower or jump in the pool! Eyelash extensions are fine to get wet. However, within the first 12 hours of having them put on you will have to avoid moisture. This is because the adhesive is still drying. The only thing that can break down the adhesive is oil. So try to avoid any eye makeup removers that contain oil.

Myth #3: They will ruin your natural lashes.

Now, having only had the extensions for a few months, I can’t speak for having them for any longer. But your natural lashes will most likely not be ruined. They will stay just as healthy as the day you left them. And you’ll probably miss the extensions once they’re gone!

Are they right for you?

Now that we’ve debunked some of the myths, it is still important so go over some of the pros and cons of getting lash extensions. They’re certainly not for everyone, and there is some maintenance required.

They require nightly cleaning.

Because your lashes will be so big and luscious, they will also pick up on more dirt and oils than natural lashes would. This requires a special gentle shampoo and a big makeup brush. If you don’t clean your lashes at least once a day, the oils that get trapped will break down the adhesive and cause the extensions to fall off quicker and sooner.

They require frequent appointments.

Your lash extensions will only last up to 2-3 weeks, and thats will the daily cleaning. Your first full set of lashes will take about two hours, and fill take about one hour. This is a time consuming process to go through about every 2 weeks. And the longer you wait, the more time and money you’ll spend in the end.

Eyelash extensions are expensive!

There’s no getting around it, eyelash extensions are a huge investment. Full sets cost at minimum $200, and fills are roughly $100 at most salons. Depending where you go, you can find some cheaper options. I was  able to find full sets done for $100 with fills costing only $50. If your research is done right, you might be able to find a place to meet your budget.

In conclusion

I was OBSESSED with my lash extensions. They were beautiful, fun, and I could walk out the door without putting a touch of makeup on. Although there is a lot to think about before getting them, I believe that if you are a good fit then you will also love your lash extensions too. I have never felt more beautiful and confident than did during the summer I made the investment. Do your research, know the pros and cons and decide if they’re right for you.
