5 Body Positive Celebrities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

1. Iskra Lawrence

Iskra Lawrence has been someone I have looked up to for a long time. She is 24, and has been an international Jag model since she was 15. She is an Aerie model, meaning her photos are never retouched. She just walked in her first Paris fashion week, strutting her size 14UK, cellulite and every curve. She is an ambassador for NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), and promotes self-love and confidence no matter what size you are. She is a leader in changing the fashion industry. Definitely follow her on social media to get a burst of body positivity everyday!

2. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has always been one of my favorite singers. From Barney, to Camp Rock, to Sonny With a Chance, to now becoming number one on Billboard charts, Demi has had a huge variety of fame. When she was 18, she struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, had bipolar disorder, and struggled with an eating disorder, making her believe she wouldn’t even make it to the age of 21. Demi is now an advocate for loving your body, and wants to spread this message to everyone. She promotes a healthy workout regimen and embraces her curves. On instagram, Demi spreads the message of body positivity while posting a lot of inspiring messages and photos!

3. Rihanna

When a celebrity loses or gains weight, it is always the top headline in the news. This is NOT where the focus should be at all, but it is the reality of it. Normally, fans and news ask questions like “is she depressed or pregnant?”, but when Rihanna recently gained a noticeable amount of weight, the applause couldn’t have been better. Her fans were extremely happy, and posting positive comments. Let’s remember, the focus shouldn’t be on anyone’s appearance in the first place. But since it is, it’s amazing that it can be so positive. Rihanna is embracing her curves and her new look, and radiates self-love and acceptance.

4. Sasha Pieterse

Sasha Pieterse, a Pretty Little Liars star, had a hormonal imbalance causing her to gain weight. People on social media were so upset about her gaining weight, and were calling her names, as well as making fun of her on social media. This is not okay whatsoever, and Sasha knew this. Instead of letting them tear her down, Sasha used this as a way to promote self-love. She made a point to love herself no matter what stage and chapter of life she is in. You can view her inspiring statement above.

5. Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham was the first plus-size model to cover Maxim and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and she walked in New York Fashion Week (pictured above). People are constantly hating on her body and sending her negative comments on social media. Ashley voiced her frustrations about these comments, and spreads the message to embrace your curvy figure. “I am more than my measurements. I’m not Ashley Graham just because I’m curvy,” she wrote. “Let’s worry about our own bodies. My body is MY body. I’ll call the shots.” Ashley continues to push for change in society, and encourages people to value their curves and imperfections, not hate them. She is trying to change the industry, and have more curvy women in the fashion spotlight, as well as have better quality clothing for them!

I hope you can use these celebrities as inspiration to love yourself, and be thankful for everything your body does for you!
