10 Reasons to Choose a Small College in a Big City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

Choosing where to go to school is a tough choice, no matter what you’re looking for. Whether you are embarking on your first year of college, or you are considering transferring to a different school, here are some reasons a small school in a big city may be the right choice for you.

1. The sense of community

There’s no doubt that beginning college can make you feel as if you are all alone. However, at a small school, it is easy to feel like you belong, thanks to community support and people who honestly want to get to know you.

2. Familiar faces

This being said, you see a lot of the friendly, familiar faces regularly, which can make you feel as though you are not lost in the crowd.

3. You get to explore the city with a “home base”

While it’s great to see the same people on campus, you might need a change of atmosphere sometimes. This is why it’s great to live in the city: you can go out and explore seemingly foreign places, and always find yourself back at home when you return to campus.

4. There’s many things to do, both on campus and off

Sometimes you feel like going out to the club, other times you are totally content with supporting your school’s basketball team. There’s no need to choose when it comes to small schools in the city.

5. You don’t need a car

When you live in a city, it is so much easier to walk or take public transportation than to have a car on campus. That means less costs and less hassle for you!

6. Opportunities to meet more people off campus

Living in a city like Boston, there are tons of opportunities to meet people from surrounding schools that you wouldn’t usually interact with, creating awesome connections and lasting friendships.

7. Cheap tickets to events in the city

There’s no need to make major plans when looking for something to do. You can simply check out local deals for college students and take a spontaneous trip to surrounding hotspots.

8. Lots of meal options

Tired of dining hall food? There are hundreds of restaurants all around you!

9. More job opportunities

Needless to say, there are so many opportunities for work when you live in a major city. It’s especially helpful when you have teachers and advisors in your corner, who genuinely want to land you those jobs and internships.

10. You get to show off the city to your friends

Go ahead, be selfish! You live in one of the greatest cities in the world– don’t be ashamed to show it off! If your friends don’t feel like staying on campus, you can always treat their visit like a weekend getaway to the city.

Hopefully this helps you make your decision. And remember, no matter where you go, you’re gonna do great!
