Visiting NYC Over Break? Here Are Four Broadway Shows You Need to See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

There’s no better time to visit New York City than during the holidays! Despite all of the tourists, there’s just something magical about all of the lights sprinkled around midtown Manhattan. If you’ve decided to make the trek to NYC this holiday season, it’s pretty obvious that you should go see a show! Here are five Broadway shows (that aren’t Hamilton) you should see this holiday season).

Come From Away

This is one of the best options if you’re looking to entertain your whole family! Come From Away takes place in the aftermath of 9/11 in a small town in Canada. After the U.S. airways shut down, many passengers were diverted to Canada. At least 7,000 passengers ended up stranded in Gander, almost 80 percent of the town’s population at the time. The community then turned this tragedy into a way to care for those from around the globe who ended up living in their tiny town. When I say I cried while watching Come From Away, I mean it. I started crying and didn’t stop until the lights went up at the end. It is that good. Get tickets for Come From Away here!

Oklahoma!

Lovingly referred to as ‘sexy Oklahoma!,’ this is not your typical production of Oklahoma!. The Broadway revival is staged in one of the most intimate spaces on Broadway, Circle in The Square, which adds to the whole experience. Circle in The Square is in a round, so no matter where you sit you are able to see the action beautifully. Topped off with vegetarian chilli and cornbread served at intermission, Oklahoma! is a once in a lifetime theatrical experience. I had never seen a production of Oklahoma! before stepping into the theatre, and now I am an avid fan. Get tickets for Oklahoma! here!

Hadestown

Forget Hamilton, this is the hottest ticket on Broadway right now! Hadestown won eight Tony awards and has been playing to standing-room-only crowds since the beginning of its Broadway run. Hadestown is a 21st century retelling of the original Orpheus and Eurydice Greek myth. Their star-crossed lover story runs parallel to the deteriorating relationship of Hades and Persephone to create this beautifully interconnected story. This is one of the hardest and most expensive tickets to get, so get your tickets sooner than later! Get tickets for Hadestown here!

Jagged Little Pill

This show is so new there isn’t even a commercial for this one like the previous ones! It is currently in previews and will officially open December 5, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy tickets to see this show now! Jagged Little Pill is considered a jukebox musical because it is based on Alanis Morissette’s album by the same name. It follows a seemingly perfect suburban family but slowly cracks begin to appear in this facade. Just in the first week, it grossed over a million, so it’s better to get your tickets before it’s totally sold out. Get tickets for Jagged Little Pill here!

Olivia is a sophomore Writing, Literature, and Publishing major at Emerson College. At any given moment, you can find her talking about books on her blog, petting dogs in the Boston Common, or impulse buying a plant or two. Ask her what musical she is currently listening to; she's dying to tell you.
