The Pros & Cons of the Kardashians

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

I know you rolled your eyes when you read the headline. I know you rolled your eyes because A) you love the Kardashians and don’t like that I’m about to criticize them, B) you hate the Kardashians and don’t believe there is one “pro” I can say about them, or C) you’re sick of seeing the K word on every social media feed you follow.

The problem with the Kardashians is that nobody can catch a break from any one of them. Let’s say that there are 10 articles about one Kardashian woman shared or posted in the span of one hour on a busy social media site. Multiply that by seven and suddenly that’s 70 pieces of information about the Kardashians/Jenners that you weren’t looking to know but suddenly find yourself reading. It’s inevitable that anyone would get sick of them like that. That doesn’t meant that the Kardashians are inherently evil people. They have good and bad sides, whether it be who they are as people or their influence over the rest of the world.

The first argument that people use to trash the Kardashians is that they are famous for being famous, or that they don’t do anything. The Kardashian name only used to be associated with Robert Kardashian Sr., who became famous for being a lawyer involved in the O.J. Simpson case. But don’t you think that argument is a bit tired now? It may have worked when they were gaining fame, but the show Keeping Up With The Kardashians is entering its eleventh season, and in the time since the show began, they’ve done a lot.

The Kardashians have essentially taken their name and built a brand. Together those girls have created a beauty line, multiple clothing lines, a lingerie collection, a fragrance and have endorsement deals for tons of beauty products. They’ve modeled as magazine cover girls and developed their own mobile apps. Recently, Kim and Khloe have released books. They are so successful because they know what to do. They know how to appear relatable even though they’re richer than all of us combined, and they know how to connect with their fans. The Jenner girls have launched a clothing line with Pac Sun and model together in magazines. Kendall is far more into her job as a model and recently worked her way up to walking in the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Kylie doesn’t do as much. And that’s probably the number one problem with the Kardashian/Jenner family: Kylie. Kylie, Kylie, Kylie. All she’s known for is her lips. And being one of the few 18-year-olds in America with a $2.7 million house. And being in a relationship with a guy eight years older than her. And there’s nothing wrong with an age gap in a relationship, but I’m sure many would agree that when one of them is 18, they shouldn’t be talking about their “ever after.” Sure, she works, but it’s mostly with her sister, and when we see her on her own it’s about her personal life.

People may dislike Kim because she got her big break out of a sex tape and is married to Kanye West. Or because she crops her poor daughter out of pictures then posts them on Instagram.

Speaking of Instagram, another problem the public might have with the Kardashians is that they overshare on social media. Seriously. There are pictures of butts galore, every single outfit of the day (or hour), paparazzi pics, selfies, everything. The Kardashians have let the public into their world to an extreme level. Unfortunately, the media adds to this. Recently, a trending topic told social media users that Kylie Jenner posted a picture in her underwear. That’s nice. If people wanted to know, they’d follow her. The media has made such a big deal of every little thing the Kardashians do, which is why people have grown to hate them. Recently, developer James Shamsi created an app called KardBlock which will block any Kardashian-related news from appearing on any feed.

With all the selfies and pictures the Kardashians post, people think they are self-centered and care only about themselves, their success and their money. But in the end, it comes down to one thing: family. Kim and Kourtney put being mothers above anything else. Khloe (and the rest of the family) rushed to Lamar Odom’s side when he almost died, even though they aren’t together anymore. At the end of the day, these ladies love each other and they support each other. They are the perfect example of a family of successful, rich and beautiful women who help each other and work together instead of sabotaging each other or trying to be better than the rest. And in the end, that’s something to be respected.
