Outfits to Wear for Your First Date

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

We’ve all spent countless hours looking at our closet trying to figure out what to wear. The anxiety is even more nerve-wracking when you’re trying to decide what to wear on a date, and not just any date—the first one. The one that makes or breaks the relationship. One date to decide them all (okay that was really bad. I’m so sorry).

But fear not, I have some first date outfit ideas that will surely make you fall in love—with fashion.

1. Maxi Dresses and Skirts

My personal favorite, maxis are the easiest way to look feminine and girly. Maxis work for anything you’re going to do the night of your date (minus rock climbing). Wear a skirt with a blouse for an elegant look, or keep it casual with a tank top or cute t-shirt. You can always layer these on top of a maxi dress, too! Add a leather jacket, blazer or vintage cardigans to your outfit (depending on your style), and you’re good to go! Accessorize with a bold neckpiece and minimal bracelets and earrings, or get rid of the necklace altogether and let the earrings get all the attention if your dress is simple. Leave your hair open, or French braid it to keep the romance alive.

2. Jeans and a T-Shirt

If you’re trying to give out a more casual vibe, go with one of the most basic and simple outfits of all time: jeans and a t-shirt. Wear a boxy white t-shirt with some high-waisted destroyed jeans and you’re looking effortlessly cool for your date. Wear a blazer with your outfit if you want to take it up a notch for the date, but still be super comfy. If you want to add a little more oomph, wear black pumps and add a neckpiece, otherwise keep it chill with a pair of sneakers. Wear a high ponytail or a messy braid with this outfit.

3. Palazzo Pants

Apparently, some demon thought of bringing back wide-legged jeans and bell bottoms (WHY GOD, WHY?) but some genius decided to make life better by creating palazzo pants. With these, you don’t have to wear skinny jeans and be out of style (like that’s even possible) but you don’t have to face the horror of bell bottoms either. And what’s better about palazzos? They’re super comfortable. A lot of women are scared of palazzos because they believe they’re only for  taller women, but truth is that anyone can look good in them. Style your outfit with palazzos the same way you would with a maxi skirt or dress by wearing a blouse or a simple tank top, depending on the look you’re going for. Add a statement neckpiece (wow I really have a thing for them, don’t I?) and you’re all set. If you’re still worried about the whole height thing, add a pair of heels! Side braids and messy buns are the way to go to add to this outfit.

4. Dresses

How can a date outfit list be complete if there is no mention of dresses? Dresses have been the go-to date outfit for, well, forever. Wear a high-low for a more sophisticated look or a t-shirt dress if you’re just going to the park. And who could forget peplums? Effortlessly sexy, peplums accentuate your figure like no other and will leave your date floored. Either way, accessorize your outfit with some minimal jewelry, like a simple gold chain or a bracelet. Leave your hair open or in side braid for a more casual look, or do the milkmaid hair for a more romantic vibe.
