How I Celebrated My Void’s ‘Purrfect’ Birthday

Since I was going to be moving to a new city by myself, I figured it would be nice to have a buddy with me to navigate the change, so a few months ago, I became a mother to a black cat. As someone who has never had their own pet before, I was nervous. A life would now be in my hands to take care of!

She had only been at the shelter for about a week when I adopted her, already one year old. She seemed shy and like she preferred isolation. Bringing her home, however, I found out that that was not the case. She’s a curious gal who likes to be where the people are. While there are times she likes to be by herself, she is not completely an introverted cat.

I waited one week until I finally settled on her name: Davina. It was between that, or Dahlia. Ultimately, Davina suited her best. It means “beloved” and “friend”. As a social gal, it made the most sense. She’s my perfect princess, so knowing that her birthday was coming up, I knew that I had to make sure she was celebrated in style. This included bringing my roommates along for the celebration!

Born in October, Davina is a true spooky kitty. I bought her a new cat tree, which has a pumpkin-shaped bed she can nap in, and Friskies Party Mix as her special treat. Since it was her birthday, she got to eat a few more treats than usual!

My roommates and I painted portraits of her while she watched. She even jumped on the table to inspect our artistic abilities. In addition, I baked brownies and made a Davina-inspired drink, consisting of 1 ounce Malibu, 1.5 ounces vodka, 2 ounces Coca-Cola, and 2 ounces of cranberry juice. I chose Malibu to add a little something different since she’s one of a kind and vodka for her strong spirit. Coca-Cola to match the coat of her fur and cranberry juice for her sassy yet sweet personality. Malibu to add a little something different since she’s one of a kind and vodka for her strong spirit.

I would say her first birthday with me, and second birthday overall, was a success! Simple, but with the essentials. I’m looking forward to leveling up her birthday game next year.
