“Writer’s block” is a phrase that strikes fear into the heart of any author. It’s best defined as a creative rut that leaves you feeling as though you are unable to write anything. There are so many different ways you can overcome your writer’s block, though, and the following are just a few that I’ve found helpful in the past.

  • Listen to music. Whether it’s upbeat pop songs or somber classical music, some good music is so helpful in getting out of a creative rut. Whether the music calms or motivates you, it’ll provide some much-needed inspiration in this time of creative drought.

  • Read a good book. Whenever I find myself faced with writer’s block, my first instinct is to turn to one of my favorite books for inspiration. Even if the plot has absolutely nothing to do with whatever I’m writing, I always find myself so guided and motivated by the words of another writer.

  • Freewrite. Freewriting often results in confusing rambling, unusable material, but sometimes, there’s a gem within all that freewriting! Even if the material ends up totally unusable, it’ll still help to spark the flow of writing within you again.

  • Go for a walk. It’s cliché advice, but it really helps. Whenever I’m faced with writer’s block, I like to take a quick walk to clear my head and get some fresh air. It’s always been so helpful to me to regain motivation and return to my work with a clear head.
