With all the great weather in New England it is hard to figure out why colleges are scrambling to get makeup classes together. We’ve only gotten 98 inches of snow. That’s nothing. In any case, students all across Boston are falling victim to the two worst words in the English language (Whiplash reference) “Makeup Class.” Sure, you want to get your money’s worth of tuition, but if that means waking up and trekking across campus on a Saturday to get it, students really wonder if it’s worth it. If you stay on top of these few things, then it will be worth it!

1. Always check the revised syllabus

Don’t be that student that is surprised when a paper is pushed up or the take home test is actually a pop quiz. With snow days come changes in the schedule, and more importantly, the syllabus. So prepare properly and stay on top of the proper due dates.

2. If you don’t have a planner, GET ONE

Since there are so many changes, it is even harder to stay on top of things now. So go to CVS or the bookstore and get a planner. You don’t want to be unprepared for the condensed and sped up classes because you didn’t know about the reading.

3. Always think ahead on readings for class

Just because class is canceled doesn’t mean that the teacher is going to go over just the reading that was due on the snow day. No. Instead, they will breeze by the stuff you actually read and get in depth about the next chunk of reading that you just assumed would be due the next actual day of class.

4. Let your boss know about makeup classes as soon as possible

If you work, you need to communicate with your boss about make up days and such. If you tell them the day before because you’re disorganized, you may be out of a job. Keep it professional, people!

5. Start papers before they are officially assigned by your teacher

It may suck at the time, but you will not regret it when everyone else in your class is pulling an all-nighter the night before the due date while you’re cuddled up in your bed. Doesn’t that sound nice?

6. Don’t avoid work on a snow day

I know it is so easy to just drop all your work and cuddle up for a movie with your friends when school is canceled, but treat it like any other day. Devote enough time to finish your homework and then hang out with your friends like you would on a regular school night. Balance is important.

7. GO TO YOUR MAKEUP CLASSES

Don’t just blow off a make up class because you don’t want to get up on a Saturday. I know it’s freezing, but just think of all the money going down the drain every minute you sleep in missing out on your own education. It’s the real world people, sometimes you have to do work on a weekend.
