How to Find the Perfect Present for Your Significant Other

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Whether it be your boyfriend or your girlfriend, shopping for a gift for your significant other can be challenging. You feel obligated to pick out the perfect gift to show that you are an amazing partner. In order to find this present, consider the following as you make your shopping list.

1. Consider their favorite activities

To make sure that your loved one truly loves their gift, you need to make sure that it will be something that they enjoy. For example, if your boyfriend or girlfriend is not a big fan of sports, try to steer clear of jerseys or game tickets. But, if they love sports, that might be the perfect option. Are they a music lover, theater fanatic, or book fiend? By doing this, you are able to narrow down some of your options for gifts.

2. Look into how long you have been dating

I know that in my relationship, as time went on our gifts that we gave to one another seemed to rise in price. While this is definitely not always the case, it is still an important factor to consider. If the holidays happen to fall at a time that is only a month or two after you began dating, it might be a better idea to keep the gifts on the less expensive side. That being said, cheap gifts do not have to mean bad gifts. You can find very meaningful presents on a budget. While you can still buy pricey gifts early on in the relationship and vice versa, it can be a little awkward if the amount spent differs drastically.

3. Consider DIY

Do-it-yourself gifts can be great options for people who are on a budget or who are exceptionally creative. They can also prove to be very meaningful gifts for you significant others (as well as friends and family). So get out your crafting gear and get to it!

4. Look into experience gifts

It can be assumed that the reason you are with your significant other is because you enjoy spending time with them. So if you feel your boyfriend or girlfriend seems to have everything already, then consider looking into some kind of activity that you can do together. This could be tickets to a sports game or play. You could even plan a day with them where you explore the city and finish it off with a nice dinner. If they are the more adventurous type, check out a gift certificate to do indoor skydiving. The ideas are limitless.
