After a long week of turning in papers and studying for midterms, I thought it would be nice to take a yoga class so I could finally relax and release some stress. This was my first yoga class at Emerson so I was excited to see what it was going to be like.Â
I have to be honest; I’m not the biggest yoga fan. I go because I know it helps with flexibility and building strength, but I don’t have very much patience. I’m also easily frustrated if I’m stuck holding a pose for too long. I usually prefer faster paced workouts like spinning or kickboxing. That’s why when I found out the yoga classes held on Fridays were hip-hop yoga, I knew I had to jump on the opportunity.Â
Hip Hop yoga is now one of my favorite fitness classes at Emerson. Your body is constantly moving and you get to listen to artists like Ellie Golding, Kid Cudi and MGMT blasting through the stereo. And even though the class is an hour and a half long the music makes the time fly by.Â
I have to admit that this workout was not easy. At times I found it very challenging especially when my arms and legs were shaking as I tried to hold my body up. Others in the class seemed to fall under this category, but the instructor reassured us we were building muscle and our bodies would get stronger with practice. I loved how positive she was and how everyone was able to find their own comfort zone and workout at their own pace.Â
One of the most interesting things about this class is the fact that the yoga studio is dark and the instructor lines the walls with Christmas lights. I had never experienced this before, and it certainly helps create a calming atmosphere. I was able to forget about everything going on in my life and have a moment of peace.  Â
So if you want to try a new way to work and relax, give yourself a challenge and go to hip hop yoga! You’re going to feel amazing.
