When we fall in love we don’t think that love will ever end. Then, when we get our hearts broken we think it’s the end of the world. We cry, we do everything we can to live in the past, and we just cannot seem to let go.
The immediate aftermath of a break up can be hard, but what’s even more difficult is handling what happens next. Having your heart broken leaves you with so many conflicting emotions that you simply just don’t know what to do with yourself.
Aside from analyzing every last detail of your break-up and eating one too many scoops of ice cream (let’s face it, we all do it), YOU are the only one who can mend your aching heart. Put together a playlist of songs that will help you sort out how you’re feeling and eventually encourage you to move on! Here is a list of some of my favorites that may help you deal with the stages of a break-up.
“Gone” -Kelly Clarkson: You’re angry, that’s normal! I don’t care how sweet or nice the guy was when he broke your little heart, he still broke it! You have every right to be pissed off and angry.

“Story of Us” -Taylor Swift: Turn up the volume on your iPod and scream this song at the top of your lungs. Belt it, cry to it. Listen to it on repeat. Let’s face it, one second everything is perfect and then all of a sudden you feel like you’ve been punched in the stomach and now you’re single. What happened? You unfortunately may never get the answer to that, but accept that your story is over and stop trying to rewrite the ending.
“In Repair” -John Mayer: “So much to do to set my heart right”—enough said. It’s going to take hard work and a lot of time, but you need to remember that you aren’t broken. Your heart may feel broken, but you aren’t broken! You’re going to get better. I promise!
“Goodbye to You” -Michelle Branch: You need a song that you can cry to and that will help you let go. Say goodbye and move forward. Trust me, if you hold on to the person that hurt you, you won’t get anywhere. No matter how much you still care about that person, you need to convince yourself that it’s over and let go.
“The Heart of Life” -John Mayer: Okay…you’re going to want to live in the past. That’s just how it goes. You won’t want to move forward or experience new things because you’re going to want to stay right here and now so you won’t have to think about your life without him…but you have to. You feel broken and hurt, but at the core of it “the heart of life is good.” Enjoy it while you can.
“Someone Like You” -Adele: Accept it. Your relationship is over. You can stalk his Facebook profile, talk about him constantly, or dream about him coming back to you all you want, but face the facts: it probably won’t happen. I know you can’t even think that anyone else other than him will make you happy, but it’s true. You may fall in love again soon after, or you might date a few guys before you find someone else, but eventually someone is going to make you even happier. Just because you aren’t going to be with this guy forever doesn’t mean he won’t always mean something special to you.
“Rhythm of Love” -Plain White T’s: It’s important to remember that love isn’t the enemy. Don’t let your heartbreak ruin how you feel about falling in love. People change and fall out of love, but remember how amazing it felt to actually be in love. You’ll experience that again!
