Dear Freshmen: Getting Over the Pre-Thanksgiving Slump

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Midterms are finally over and Halloween came and went. All you want to do is curl up with Netflix and sleep, right? Don’t do it. Well, do it for an hour or so, but that’s enough. Don’t fall into the post-midterm cycle of slacking off before Thanksgiving break. Here are some tips that will help you get over the slump.

Go to class.

Yes, it’s not warm and sunny in Boston like it was when school started in September, but that doesn’t mean you can skip class to avoid the cold. Your bed may seem warm and cozy when you’re curled up in your blankets, but don’t let your grades suffer by missing class. A lot of professors count participation as a part of your grade and they do notice when you’re not there.

Study, and take breaks too.

Luckily, we’ve already told you about some study hacks. This will help you get back into the swing of things. Make a study schedule. If you need a break, definitely take one. Reward yourself with one episode of Netflix, but then get back to work. The semester is starting to wind down, but don’t forget to do your homework. It will keep you motivated.

Homesick? Skype your family and hometown friends.

You’re almost to Thanksgiving break! Hopefully you’ll be on your way home to see all of the people you had to leave when you came to college. If you’re really missing them, set up a Skype session with your besties or your family. Trust me, they miss you as much as you miss them. Make plans with your friends for when you all are back home to have some much needed quality time together.

Go outside and explore

The cold weather might hit you hard and you may want to stay inside and watch Netflix for hours, but there are so many fun things Boston has to offer during the winter months. All of the leaves haven’t fallen just yet, so get a hot cider and walk around the Common or to Faneuil Hall. Boston is beautiful. Don’t miss it while hiding in your room.

You’re only halfway done with the semester, so keep pushing and working like you were doing when school started. The post-midterm phase is sort of like a fresh start. Don’t give up!
