What are you involved with on campus? I currently am in Emerson Stage’s “The Winter’s Tale” as Paulina. In addition to being President of Kappa, I am a member of Mercutio Troupe and the Business Manager of the Emerson Recognition and Achievement Awards (ERA) this semester. In past years, I have been involved with Orientation, EDC, MTS, and Rareworks.

What is Emerald Empowerment and how is it different then Take Back the Night?

Beyond the name change, Emerald Empowerment is still very much rooted in what Take Back the Night has been on campus for the past 13 years. It is our week of programming to raise awareness of and end domestic violence and partner abuse.  In re-branding, Kappa discussed wanting the entire Emerson College community to have more ownership and understanding of the campaign. Emerald Empowerment is a fight to end domestic violence and partner abuse within our college community AND beyond. When we discuss this issue, it could be very easy to say this is an issue experienced by others, but the statistics don’t lie. We are experiencing it all together.

What else can we expect from Kappa this semester? In addition to the Red Cross Blood Drive being hosted by us on February 21, be prepared for events being co-sponsored by Active Minds and us during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February 24-March 2).

What inspires you as an actress/performer? As an actress/performer/artist/fill in the blank, many things, practically everything, inspire me. For four years now, I have been studying the art of vulnerability and the complexity of the human species. It has been fun, but oh my goodness, if I didn’t say I was inspired by being human and being imperfect, I’d be fooling you. The people I go to class with everyday are courageous and brave and it is their willingness to work that makes me so comfortable in my skin.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far at Emerson? I’d say there are many things I am proud of, but the biggest accomplishment so far would have to be directing last fall’s production of “For Colored Girls/who have considered suicide when the rainbow was enuf” by Ntozake Shange. I first read the show my freshman year and having carried it in my heart for the three years, I felt so incredibly blessed when Mercutio gave me the opportunity to direct it. If I wasn’t in class, I was in rehearsal or reading the play. I was completely consumed by the story we were telling because of how strong our ensemble was and how close and comfortable we became with each other even at the most uncomfortable moments in the play. People from all walks of Emerson were in the audience – it wasn’t just theatre folks performing for theatre folks. It was people sharing with people.

What are your plans for after graduation?  In the fall of 2014, I would like to enter a Masters in Public Health or Health Education program. In the meantime, I would like to find a 9-5 for the day and audition for productions that would rehearse evenings.

Where do you see yourself in ten years? In ten years, I see myself happy. I’ll have completed my doctorates and be pursuing a career in the field of Theatre for Public Health. Perhaps maybe a certified life coach!
