Paramount, adj. more important than anything else; supreme.
The Paramount is a small restaurant nestled into the cozy stores along Charles Street. Not to be mistaken with our own Paramount Cafe here at Emerson, this popular spot is a must try so you can taste for yourself why their food reigns supreme.
One thing you should know about The Paramount beforehand is the proper way to order. As you first step in the door there is a sign explaining the ways of the restaurant. You wait in line (often rather long), order at the counter, wait for your food, pay, and then your party is seated at a table. If you don’t follow these instructions, you might find yourself in an awkward confrontation with another customer over a table. I saw this happen and even watching the situation made me uncomfortable, so I’ll say it again. This is one place where following the crowd is best. It may seem odd at first, but their system works.
Like I mentioned earlier, this place gets busy. We went around 1:30pm for brunch and the line was out the door. I heard great reviews, so I was willing to stick it out for the 45 minute wait. Two of my friends, on the other hand, booked it after about 15. I don’t know how they left all the delicious smells from the kitchen. Seeing as how busy they were I was extremely surprised at how very friendly the staff was and their willingness to accommodate. The chef who took my order of chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries personally asked me whether I wanted strawberries sprinkled on top of my short stack or mixed in with the batter. And later when he saw me snapping some photos he nudged another chef out of the way so I could get my shot. These are the little details that make an experience memorable and will keep me coming back.
These pancakes were superb. I’m normally one to only order pancakes if they are paper thin, but The Paramount proved my theory wrong. I received three fluffy cakes packed with chocolate and fresh strawberries. Perfection. The pancakes were slightly crunchy on the outside and never turned soppy after I spread my butter around. And a proper breakfast isn’t complete without a nice large glass of juice. Fresh squeezed daily, The Paramount serves up orange, cranberry apple, and lemonade to quench your thirst.
I can’t wait to visit again and continue eating my way through the whole menu. Next on my list is the Huevos Rancheros!
