10 Must-Have Items For Your Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

If you were lucky enough to score a coveted summer internship then we’re sure you’re all kinds of excited and nervous. While you’re probably stoked to meet your new boss, co-workers and fellow interns, you’re probably freaking out about other things too. For example: what should you bring? Have no fear, collegiettes! we’ve created a list of the top ten things you should bring to your summer internship. This way you can focus on impressing your boss, not worrying about the little things.

Roomy Bag or Tote

A roomy bag or tote is the ultimate must-have for your summer internship. If you pick the right one it will fit everything you need and then some. Stuff your laptop, wallet, keys and other essentials into the tote and you’re good to go. We’re obsessed with Madewell’s Transporter Tote. Get it as a pre-internship gift to yourself.

Earphones

Perfect for tunning out sketchy strangers on the subway, earphones are great for commuting. They also come in handy at the office when you’re working on your desktop computer or laptop. Plug in your earphones and play your favorite Pandora station- just make sure to always have one earphone out so you aren’t completely blocking out the world. You never know when you’ll be needed for a task!

Snacks

Chances are that your internship hours are going to be long. While you might get a lunch break, don’t underestimate the power of a good snack. Granola bars are perfect for in between meals. You could also bring apples, trail mix or fruit snacks. Anything that will keep your blood sugar up and your body ready and alert!

Chargers

This should be pretty self explanatory but you’d be surprised how often we’ve forgotten our chargers at home. Definitely bring your laptop charger but don’t forget your phone charger too! Your phone is probably your single most important connection to the world, so always make sure it has a little juice in it.

Gum or Mints

Okay girls, gum or mints are a definite must. Your morning cup of joe might leave you with coffe breath or your lunch might be stinky- play it safe and always have gum or mint in your bag to keep your breath smelling fresh.

Hair Ties

Hair ties are important especially in the summer. When it’s hot and gross outside the last thing you want to worry about is a sweaty neck. Keep your mane in check by always having some hair ties on hand. When the humidity gets the best of you, you can simply toss your hair up into a chic topknot or an effortlessly cool ponytail.

Notebook

Keep a pocket sized notebook with you at all times. You never know when a brilliant idea will come to mind or when you’ll need to jot down notes from your boss.

Pens

This seems like a no brainer, especially if you’ll be in an office setting. However, even if you’re in an office, you might not always have access to pens. Plus how will you write down ideas in your notebook if you don’t have a pen? Come on, collegiettes- keep up.

Makeup Essentials

The keyword here is essentials. We’re talking mascara, concealer, lip balm and whatever color you’re wearing on your lips. That’s it, girls. If you must, bring your blush too. But, to be honest, most of your makeup will melt off your face in the summer anyway, so just keep it to the light, airy (SPF-infused) necessities.

Reusable Water Bottle

Bring a reusable water bottle with you to your internship. You can fill it up before you leave home and then fill it up in the office. It’s summer and it’s hot but you should always stay hydrated anyway!

Now that you know what you should bring, you can go out there and conquer the world! Good luck, collegiettes!
