This Year’s Top Halloween Costume Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Fall is finally here, and so is the season’s festivites! And, the first of the autumn holidays is right around the corner. So, I’ve come up with a couple Halloween costume ideas that aren’t crazy expensive. In fact, you might be able to create them from items already in your closet!

A sports player/jock – Not only is this costume easy to make, but it’s also super comfy. You can take any old sports jersey, throw on some athletic bottoms, a ball cap and you’re set! There a lot of different ways you can get creative with this costume.

A “Despicable Me” minion – Even if you haven’t seen the animated hit “Despicable Me”, almost everyone is familiar with these little yellow characters. For this costume, you’ll need a yellow top, some denim shorts or overalls/suspenders, and some goggles! (A headlight is optional if you want the complete look.) If you don’t already own some of these items, you can most likely pick them up at your local Wal-Mart or thrift store.

A Beanie Baby – Get creative with this one! Whether they want to admit it or not, everyone has owned a Beanie Baby at some point in their life. You can dress up as any animal of your choice; then, simply print out the classic Ty© logo (the red heart-shaped tag) and tie it around your neck or pin it somewhere on your clothes.

Rosie the Riveter – Although they may not know her by name, everyone has seen images of the classic “Rosie” poster before. All you need is a plain denim shirt and a red bandana. Simply wear your hair in any up-do of your choice and tie the bandana around your head. You can wear any bottoms that you desire, and pair the entire outfit with some red lipstick to complete the look!

Winnie the Pooh – Childhood storybook characters always make a good Halloween costume, and this one is probably one of the easiest to accomplish. You’ll need a yellow skirt, shorts, or pants, and a red short-sleeved top. You can also purchase or make your own yellow teddy bear ears. If you don’t want people to question your costume, you can also take any old bucket or pot-type object and scribble the word “HUNNY” across the side of it to make your own honey pot.

A “walker” – Or a zombie, if you don’t watch The Walking Dead. If you want to go for a scarier look this Halloween, this costume is an easy way to achieve it. You can also avoid having the same costume as someone else, because no two walkers look alike! For this costume, take some old clothes that you were planning on giving away, or go to your local thrift store and purchase any clothing items that you wouldn’t mind ripping or tearing up. All you need is tattered clothing and messy hair. To achieve the complete look, splatter some red paint on your outfit as well to imitate blood. Get creative with face makeup as well to make yourself look as “dead” as possible!

Group Costumes– If you’re planning on dressing up with a group of friends, there are several options that are easy to find costumes for. You could be the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel super heroes, the Disney princesses, the 7 Dwarves from Snow White, video game characters or even the cast from your favorite movie!

These are just a few of the more originative, easy to dress for costume ideas that I could come up with; but the possibilities are endless. Like I said before, get creative!
