Thanksgiving How-To: Stay Balanced During Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

The turkey, stuffing and carb overload that seems to be right around the corner can feel overwhelming for college students out of their regular routine. Even though a break is needed from the tight schedules of gym, class and extra curriculars, it can be difficult to roll out of bed for a workout while at home. Especially with pie around the corner! Lucky enough for you, here are some tips to maintain your mental and physical wellness while away.

1. Go for walks

This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, have conversations with loved ones, along with getting the necessary exercise!

2. Make sure to drink plenty of water

Sometimes we stuff ourselves until we feel unwell, especially when the meal is a delicious Thanksgiving spread. This feeling can easily be helped simply by drinking more water. Not to mention the benefits that staying hydrated has for your skin and body overall during the cold seasons.

3. Reorganize

Being home without the stress of school is a great time to reorganize any clutter, especially in your room. Some cleaning and daily chores will help cleanse your mind as well and can be a healthy detox to let things go.

4. Wait until the meal … and dessert

When we see the cheese, crackers and yummy appetizers come from the kitchen, it can be difficult to resist. With this being said, waiting until the main meal to really enjoy may be for the best. Pacing yourself on the appetizers will save more room for the delicious dinner so you don’t feel overstuffed and bloated.

5. Most important: Do not get caught up in the calories!!

At the end of the day, you are on break. Make sure to remember that. Do not skip out on dessert if you want it! This is your time to be able to breathe and let your body do the same. Unbuttoning your pants after a meal is a good sign.

With these reminders, you should be ready to take on any course this Thanksgiving. Enjoy your Thanksgiving breaks!
