Shelby McKay-Creator of Elon’s ColorRun and Haunted Trail

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I am a senior studying Sport and Event Management at Elon. I am originally from North Carolina but now claim Baltimore, Maryland as my home. I have an active interest in athletics, primarily college athletics. I don’t ever see myself leaving college because I plan to work in Campus Recreation, Student Affairs, or College Athletics at any university.

Claim to fame…
Color Run and SportsFest. SportsFest was my first large event since working with Campus Recreation. It was a successful event to start off the school year. Color Run was the first color run on Elon’s Campus. I worked with Elonthon to create an event that over 500 students participated in. Elonthon was able to raise about $4,000.

What inspires you?
Other individuals’ passion and energy inspires me. I want everything I do to benefit someone or contribute to one’s passion. For example, I serve in the Kernolde Center to benefit the community and I work in athletics to experience the passion of student athletes.

Break it down for us… (what’s it all about?)
I like running events more than attending events. I like to start from scratch and build my way to a great event. When I attend events I start to nit pick the event and ultimately I don’t enjoy it anymore. I get more excited to plan an event than to participate in it.

Why should other students get involved?
Getting involved creates a well-rounded individual. Students are able to build different tools and skills that can evolve into leadership and positively affect their futures. Getting involved also benefits the university. Having different backgrounds contribute to one program can help develop that program into a strong program. For example, I was the Student Programming Coordinator for Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference. In the past, the Multicultural Student Council planned the conference. In February 2012, the Center for Leadership collaborated with the Multicultural Student Council to plan a successful conference. In the end, both offices received an award for best collaboration.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I have worked with many different offices of Elon: Athletics, Multicultural Center, Center for Leadership, Kernodle Center, Campus Recreation, and the Executive Intern Program through the President’s Office.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Watch reality TV shows like the Real Housewives and any show on HGTV.

Avery is a sophomore at Elon University majoring in Print Journalism. She's involved with the yearbook, Phi Psi Cli, and the newspaper, The Pendulum, as well as a four year honors program called Leadership Fellows, and is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Theta Nu Chapter. Born and raised at the real Jersey Shore, she loves the beach, traveling, writing, running, and shopping. She recently studied abroad in Costa Rica for January Term, and hopes to go abroad for a semester in the fall of 2011. She hopes to move to Manhattan after she graduates and work for a women's magazine. Avery is excited to have the chance to bring Her Campus to Elon University.
