Keagan Gros-President of Sweet Signatures

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My name is Keagan Gros and I am a senior Exercise Science major with a minor in Public Health. I have lived all over the world – fun fact, I was born in Singapore – but most recently I’m from Westchester, New York. Anyone who knows me knows that I am always singing and that has been true for my whole life. I’ve been in choirs since elementary school, did musicals throughout middle and high school, and was in an all-girls a cappella group in high school, as well. When I was in fourth grade I look guitar lessons but I didn’t really stick with it, however since then I’ve just taught myself chords! Music means the world to me.

Claim to fame…

I guess I would say my claim to fame is being this year’s president of Sweet Signatures, commonly referred to as ‘Sweet Sigs’, the only all-female a cappella group on Elon’s campus. We have worked extremely hard this year and just released our new holiday album “Unwrapped” featuring 9 holiday songs, including favorites like ‘Winter Song’, ‘Santa Baby’ and my personal favorite, ‘What Christmas Means to Me’.

What inspires you?

I’ve had a lot of role models over the years who have influenced and encouraged me. There have been so many people in Sweet Signatures, college, and throughout life who have inspired me and keep on inspiring me. I try to find the best qualities of these people and encompass those traits be the best leader and person I can be. I hope one day I will be a role model for others, just as people have motivated and set examples for me.

Break it down for us… (what’s it all about?)

Becoming the president of Sweet Signatures is one of the best decisions I have made in college.  It’s a huge commitment and I often joke that I get three hours of sleep a night but between classes, work, other extracurricular activities and Sigs, there are only so many hours in a day.  This semester Sigs got 7 talented new members, and we have already preformed at a variety of venues around campus. We have been working really hard to practice for and produce our holiday album “Unwrapped”.  You can come see Sweet Signatures perform songs off our new album at Luminaries, Midnight Meals, our winter concert and at President Lambert’s holiday party.  Sweet Sigs believes that “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear”!

Why should other students get involved?

For girls that love to sing, Sweet Sigs is a life changing experience.  I auditioned as a freshman and it gave me a group of friends of all ages the second week of school.  The biggest differences between my friendships in Sweet Signatures and other organizations I am involved in is that we all love to sing and that’s what we get to do together.  We combine our passion of singing with great friendships, which is truly beautiful. Sweet Signatures has given me the opportunity to record two CD’s, audition for NBC’s television show, “The Sing Off”, sing in weddings, participate in inter-collegiate competitions, and travel and sing, including Nashville, Washington D.C., Florida, to name a few. Being involved in Sweet Signatures is much more than just singing, it is also about the friendships and the unique experiences it has provided all of us during our time at Elon.

What else are you involved in on campus?

Aside from Sweet Signatures I am also a member of Alpha Xi Delta, a Facilities Manager at Campus Recreation, and a member of the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I spend most of my free time with my friends… my days are normally pretty busy so I love those rare free moments when I can relax and joke around with my friends.  I like to keep singing, play the guitar, watch “How I Met Your Mother” with my roommates, or just do anything spontaneous.

Avery is a sophomore at Elon University majoring in Print Journalism. She's involved with the yearbook, Phi Psi Cli, and the newspaper, The Pendulum, as well as a four year honors program called Leadership Fellows, and is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Theta Nu Chapter. Born and raised at the real Jersey Shore, she loves the beach, traveling, writing, running, and shopping. She recently studied abroad in Costa Rica for January Term, and hopes to go abroad for a semester in the fall of 2011. She hopes to move to Manhattan after she graduates and work for a women's magazine. Avery is excited to have the chance to bring Her Campus to Elon University.
