This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

This past Saturday October 27th, there was yet another horrific shooting and hate crime in America which took the lives of eleven innocent civilians. The shooter opened fire within a Jewish synagogue in a bureau of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which is known for its welcoming, safe, family oriented, lively atmosphere.

Squirrel Hill is known within the Pittsburgh community for its warm and loving residents. One of its most well known former residents was Mr. Fred Rogers. This man was an incredibly bright light and positive influence on the lives of countless children thanks to his PBS program “Mr Rogers Neighborhood.”

Through his program, he taught kids around the country how to be grateful, love your neighbor, share, have patience, and more. Mr Rogers praised acceptance and empathy and influenced generations of children with his soft smile and warm heart.

As the community of Pittsburgh, and Squirrel Hill in particular, takes action to recoup after the tragedy that has stricken their home, Mr Rogers and his teachings are in the forefront of everyone’s mind. On many posters seen at vigils in the recent days, you can read the words…

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

This quote by Mr Rogers describes perfectly his positive attitude and heartwarming presence in the public eye. Countless community members in the Pittsburgh and Squirrel Hill area are spending time and resources investing in uplifting their community. The city has banded together like no other, and Mr Fred Rogers is in the forefront of everyone’s mind.
