How to Escape the Elon Bubble: A Weekend Getaway

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Many of us are now searching for a much-needed break from the “Elon Bubble.” Sometimes, a little getaway with your closest friends is the perfect cure. It may seem like there isn’t much going on around the town of Elon, but just three hours away lies the very young and exciting environment of Asheville, N.C. This charming city truly has something for everyone.

Asheville is a small city in Western North Carolina with a noticeable hipster vibe. The city’s restaurant and bar scene is especially unique, with many small, locally owned joints throughout. Personally, I suggest visiting Mayfel’s or Tupelo Honey Café. Both restaurants have interesting decor and outstanding food. Did I mention Tupelo Honey has a do-it-yourself Bloody Mary bar? Of course, there are several other incredible local restaurants regardless of the type of food you’re looking for.

Another great aspect of Asheville is the amount of small, unique shops in the city. There are quite a few boutiques and specialty stores for those looking for one-of-a-kind merchandise. One standout boutique for me was The Traveling Chic Boutique, owned by Elon senior, Annie Crosby. The boutique’s apparel and accessories collections are very stylish and well made.

During my visit to Asheville, we also went to a salt cave and spa. We did a meditation session in the cave, of which, is filled with natural salt rocks. Salt caves are actually used as a form of therapy, called speleotherapy. Salt has historically been used as treatment for issues such as asthma, congestion, depression, sleep disorder, stress, and more. The Asheville Salt Cave is the only natural salt cave in the United States and is definitely worth the visit. The spa also offers a variety of massages and beauty products, such as salt scrubs and salt lamps.

From the youthful vibe to the unique restaurants, shopping, and salt caves, I’d say Asheville is the perfect weekend getaway for us collegiettes. I encourage you to take advantage of this hidden gem and explore the city yourself!
