It all started with the ‘ombre’ hair trend – dark brown hair on top that is gradually lightened until the ends are honey blonde. The trend started back in 2010 when celebrities such as Lauren Conrad, Drew Barrymore and Rachel Bilson took the red carpet with the bold two-tone hairstyle. Lauren Conrad, the modern day fashion icon, has been widely considered the pioneer of this look. Since then, it has been seen everywhere from the runway to the streets … and now even Elon! Girls on campus have been spotted sporting this hairstyle and pulling it off with ease.

Not only does the style look cool, it’s very easy to maintain. For those of us who have been putting our paychecks toward expensive highlights every few months, we can now embrace our natural color and forget worrying about roots. All you need to do once your hair has been dyed is use shampoo for color-treated hair and heat-protection products before using your blow dryer or hair straightener.
If you’re skilled with box dyes, try the dip-dye look at home! All you need is hair bleach, developer, gloves, a brush, foil and hair dye. If not, your hairstylist should know a lot about the look and will probably do the best job for your hair.

Some A-listers and even Elon students are taking this trend to the next level with bolder, brighter colors. Hues of pink, blue, and purple are becoming more and more sought after in the fashion industry, setting the standards for collegiettes’ everyday style. Lauren Conrad showed up to her recent book signing with bright fuchsia at the end of her golden locks and she has even been spotted with tie-dyed strands. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, go for this. Otherwise, the more natural, brunette-to-blonde look is still very popular. Whichever way you choose to go, this trend is definitely here to stay for 2012.
