The Best of Summer 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

It was the summer of crop-tops, royal babies, and “Blurred Lines.” With so much happening in the world of entertainment news, celebrity gossip and, style and fashion, the summer of twenty-thirteen was one that will undoubtedly be remembered for many summers to come.

HerCampus takes a look back at all this summer had to offer, from the A-list baby boom to the music videos that left us speechless.

Music Videos: It seems like the entire planet (or at least close to 170,000,000 of us according to Vevo.com) has seen what is most likely the summer’s most famous, or infamous, music video. You guessed it, Miley Cyrus’s raunchy, confusing, yet strangely fascinating “We Can’t Stop.” From blatantly obvious product placement like Beats Pills speakers to eos lip balm, to bubblegum pink blood and twerking bears, this was four minutes of Miley declaring to the world -in case they hadn’t already realized from her public drug use, nudity in the media, and scandalous late night talk show interviews-  “I’M NOT HANNAH MONTANA ANYMORE!” Well I think it is safe to say, we get the message loud and clear. For a more tame, yet still incredible music video, Miley’s fellow former Disney star Selena Gomez made an impression this summer with “Come and Get It.”

Fashion: It has been gradually happening for a while now, but after the summer of 2013 I think it is safe to say with confidence that the 90s are back! With crop tops galore and tie-dye inspired patterns on everything from bohemian skirts to printed jorts, it was a summer of throwback fashion. Another huge trend that carried over from the school year to summer vacation was tribal prints. Ikat patterns were popular on bikini tops, bodycon dresses, and more. Do you think these trends will stick around for the fall?

The Baby Boom: The world watched as Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton stepped out for the first time holding their adorable baby boy. With class, grace and an impressive level of privacy, the royal couple seemed as in love as ever (and extremely down to earth as Wills personally loaded the baby seat and drove the family home!) In a less classy fashion, including tabloid stories and attention-hungry Instagrams, Kim and Kanye also had their baby. Kimye did not disappoint those hoping for a unique celebrity baby name, donning their newborn “North.”

Reminiscing on summer trends and events makes Elon students crave the warm summer days filled with days at the pool and nights on the town. But even as classes start and the seasons change, the opportunities for new trends and celebrity shockers are endless.
