5 Ways to Stick to Your New Years Resolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

As February quickly draws to a close, many of us have started to waver-If not completely given up-on our new years resolutions. Whether it’s your promise to work out every day or your motivation to not order so many late night pizzas, we can all agree that keeping up these goals can be a challenge. However if you’re still feeling the push towards self-improvement, here are some ways you can get back on track with your resolution and end the battle between sleeping in or working out.

1.     Find a Resolution Buddy

This person can be anyone from a friend to someone in your family. As resolution buddies you will share the same goal of the year and make sure that each other sticks to it. It’s important to have someone like this to hold you accountable and help you find the motivation to keep going!

2.     Change it Up

Who says your New Years Resolution has to be the same from January 1st to December 31st? If you’re finding it hard to keep up with your resolution, why not modify? Instead of going to the gym every day, try going three or four times a week. If going to bed earlier just isn’t your thing, try doing something before bed that’ll make it easier to fall asleep. Don’t feel the need to stick to the exact version of your resolution all year.

3.     Be Open to Change

Sticking to a New Years Resolution means being willing to make a positive change in your life. When your motivation starts to waver it’s easy to go back to life before the New Year when you didn’t have any commitments and suddenly that life starts to look like a lot more fun. The key to sticking to your resolution is to be open and willing to make a change in yourself. Without this it’s easy to fall back into your old habits and routines and say you’ll stick to the change next year.

4.     Reward Yourself

As Tom and Donna from one of my favorite shows, Parks and Recreation say, “treat yo self”. What fun is a resolution if you do it as a chore and dread the days you have to go without chocolate? Instead of laboring away trying to stick to your resolution, make it easier by rewarding yourself for a job well done. At the end of each week that you stuck to your resolution, splurge on that slice of Pandora’s pizza or buy yourself a new sweater. Whatever it takes to make you feel like your resolution is paying off, do it.

5.     Remember Why You Started

The most important part of maintaining your New Years Resolution is remembering why you chose to do it in the first place. By keeping a journal or talking to a friend, it’s easy to see the positive changes that your resolution is making. Without this, it’s easy to forget why you started which makes it easier to quit. Keep reminding yourself of the reasons why you wanted to make a change and you’ll be back on track with your resolutions in no time!
