5 Fashion Rules We’re Tired of Hearing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

As the first day of fall quickly approaches (September 22nd!), the leaves start to change, as do our wardrobes! Those lace-up sandals you were crazy about will soon be buried under a pile of your trendiest heeled booties and your suede mule heeled clogs. Unfortunately, like most things in life, with this long awaited wardrobe revamp comes a set of tiresome “rules”. Keep reading to find out the 5 biggest fashion “no’s” that I say, “yes” to! To all my fashion police out there, here’s to you.

1. Rule: All Black is Drab.

Response: Black is the new black.

Follow Kendall Jenner’s look and get effortless street style in an all black ensemble.

Black on black has been assimilated with the Goth fashion trend that people tend to shy away from. But fear not! Many celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, have embraced the all black trend. It offers a sleek silhouette that looks good on everyone. Plus it hides that coffee stain from rushing to your 8 am very well! As my favorite quote says “I’ll stop wearing black when they invent a darker color”.

2. Rule: No White After Labor Day.

Response: Can I live?

Nothing will make you stand out in a crowd more than a clean white outfit among darker hues.

No black clothes, no white clothes; what am I supposed to wear? Color? Get real. The no white after Labor Day rule is as old as your grandpas new balance sneakers. Let’s be honest, our grandmothers all invented that rule to get rid of those orthopedic nightmares. Try pairing your white jeans with a white sweater and brown booties for the ultimate crisp autumn look.

3. Rule: Leggings Aren’t Pants.

Response: Tell That to My Lulu’s.

Rock this matching athleisure with your bestie! Looks cool from class to the gym and back to bed.

To all the haters, I’ll be over here super comfy in my leggings. There’s nothing worse than realizing you’re late for class and all you have to wear are jeans. Athleisure is the trend of the moment and I couldn’t be happier. So throw on your favorite pair of Lulu’s and your Adidas and make your “just rolled out of bed” look a fashion statement.

4. Rule: The 90’s are Dead.

Response: Cher Horowitz Called; She Wants Her Slip Dress Back.

Cher and Dionne are displaying a classic 90’s athleisure trend. Pencil me in for both those outfits.

Although I had just been born when Clueless came out, Cher’s style defines me to this day. The tank top over her white t-shirt for gym class, the iconic red slip dress, her 90s workout apparel; forget about it. Pair your favorite peasant top with a velvet chocker and doc martins and you’ll jump across decades while still staying relevant!

5. Rule: Girl’s Clothes are for Girls; Boy’s Clothes are for Boys.

Response: I’m wearing a Men’s Flannel Right Now.

Wayne and Garth are totally in right now. Take a cue from the boys and rip those jeans!

If you’re anything like me, you think this rule is both bogus and lame. Come autumn, all I want to do is put on my boyfriend jeans and my boyfriend’s clothes. Fashion is becoming fluid and the idea of his and hers clothing is slowly transitioning out in many high fashion brands. So wear that men’s tee with your jean skirt or throw on your boyfriend’s sweater over a dress, anything goes!

Fashion should be fun! So ditch the rules and wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.
