What to Do Over Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elizabethtown chapter.

We have one week, and only one week, to spend with our friends from both high school and college, to relax, to catch up with our families, and to make some extra cash at work. Some of us, like myself, spend the time during their spring break working. Others, like some of my friends, would rather be out exploring. Here are a few cool ideas and trips that you can make if you aren’t sure what to do over your spring break.

Visit the city!

If you are a city person, take a day in the city! Close by is the historical Philadelphia, but New York City will always be my favorite because of the large shops, bright lights, and most of all: Broadway! Some shows will offer discounted matinee show tickets, and some will offer student discounts. Some A+ stores in Time Square include the Disney Store, Forever 21, the M&M Store, and Toys “R” Us. If you need a meal with some sparkle, check out Ellen’s Stardust Diner where all the waiters/waitresses are aspiring Broadway performers which means you will get a show while you enjoy your meal.

Pick out a new book to read

No matter if you enjoy anime, nonfiction, history, teen romance, or the latest edition of your favorite magazine, it never hurts to start a new read. Check out the used book store in your town for books on sale, or go hide inside a Barnes and Noble for a couple hours with some Starbucks and a book. The possibilities for adventures are endless when you look in a book (at least to me they are). According to USAToday, you can also pick up one of these great reads from their top books in 2017-

  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio (yes…it is more than a movie)

  • Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

  • Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon (another book-to-movie adaptation has been created)

  • Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

  • The Shack by William P. Young

Make some extra cash

Okay, so maybe you don’t have a job back home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still make some money. There are endless possibilities of the small tasks that people will pay others to do for them. Examples include- walking their dog, mowing their lawn, helping to clean their house, picking up their groceries, or even selling your used items on apps like Letgo or Mercari. While you may not make the most money you’ve ever made or do the most glamorous work in the world, a little extra cash could mean a new manicure or a movie night with your girls.

Visit somewhere new or a place you already love

Spring break isn’t always about going where you always visit, or even going somewhere new. It can always be a mix of both. For familiar settings, go to the amusement park closest to you, the beach, or even the mall with a group of girlfriends to get together and catch up. For some crazy new fun, try visiting Centralia, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens, Crystal Cave, Longwood Gardens, or the Camden Aquarium.

Treat Yourself

Not everyday of your spring break needs to be an adventure. Take a day to fill the tub with epsom salts and your newest bath bomb, light some candles, and pamper yourself. Go out to the nearest nail salon for a simple (or complex) manicure or go get your hair done. The whole idea of spring break is to give us college students some time to destress and live a little, so why not treat yourself to the relaxation that you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
