NC Civility Summit Event with Keynote Speaker Ndaba Mandela

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

On Saturday February 18th, numerous organizations on campus are sponsoring an all-day enrichment experience. The event starts at 12pm in Hendrix Theatre and ends at 6pm. Lunch is included and tickets are free for ECU students, $5 for ECU faculty and staff, and $10 for outside registrants. Keynote speaker Ndaba Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson and co-founder of Africa Rising Foundation will start off the event. Mandela speaks of the bright future of Africa and leads in his grandfather’s footsteps by letting people across the globe know that one person can make a difference. After, multiple sessions will be held with topics including race relations, gender equality, and LBGT and Trans issues. The mission of this summit is to engage in dialogues, build coalitions and enact change globally and in the community.

This event will help start the conversation about issues that burden our country. It’s also extremely important to learn about the struggles of people different than you because some people might not have the privileges that you were born with. This is a chance to reduce your ignorance or discuss issues that you are passionate about. If you consider yourself a feminist, this is the perfect event for you because feminism is about fighting for the rights of all people. If you’re not a feminist, learning about the problems of modern day society is important for everyone. I hope to see all of you there, feminist or not.
