Meet Jill DeFranco, President of Phi Mu!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

Name: Jill Defranco

Year: Junior

Greek Affiliation: Phi Mu

Major: Industrial distribution and logistics with a Minor in business administration

HC: What made you want to hold a leadership position?

Jill: I am inspired every day by the women in my chapter, and I knew it would be an honor to lead them. I was The Vice President of Chapter Development of Phi Mu for 2016 and felt that President was the next move forward. It was this huge opportunity in front on me and I knew that if I became President, it would be a year of experiences I would not be able to have ever again.

HC: How do you like your role as President?

Jill: It has not been long, but so far, I have really enjoyed it. The position has kept me busy, that’s for sure, but I like it. I have an amazing executive board and support system; I know I will be very thankful for them by the end of this year. I have also had the opportunity to meet other Greek leaders on campus, and that continues to inspire me everyday!

HC: Other than your sorority, what else are you involved in on campus?

Jill: I have been the President of Pirates for Down Syndrome Awareness since August; I love our club and giving back to the community. I actually just taught a very successful paint night to a class of 16 individuals with special needs.

HC: Do you find it hard, being the President of two organizations on campus?

Jill: People always ask me how I am President of two organizations, but when you set goals for yourself, and you reach those goals, it does not become a terrible stressful situation, but an exciting one.  Do I get stressed at times? Yes, but I know how to reach out to my support system and wonderful officers when I need to. It all depends on how you look at it. These are two positions I’ve wanted and two organizations that I am passionate about. Both are incredibly worth it and special to me!

HC: What’s your favorite thing about ECU?

Jill: I am from Cleveland, Ohio. When I came to ECU, I didn’t know anyone here. It was much more of a culture shock than I thought it would be, but people are so much nicer down here. I think ECU has a great environment to do what you want/ reach your goals and everyone encourages one another.  I think that’s definitely my favorite part, the atmosphere.

HC: What’s your favorite thing about Phi Mu?

Jill: I love that we are our own little melting pot. We have so much to offer, so many different personalities and talents that compliment one another.

HC: If you had any advice for a younger member hoping to get involved in a leadership position within their chapter, what would it be?

Jill: My advice would be: If you want something, go for it. No one can push you more than you can push yourself.  I think while it’s really important to have other’s support, another highly important quality in today’s world is to have self motivation and determination. Do not settle, the sky is the limit, don’t let ANYONE make you think otherwise.
