Life Lessons I Learned My First Year of College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

My first year at ECU has been filled with many ups and downs. I learned a whole lot about myself, my ambitions and passions. All the hard work has only allowed me to grow and learn how to navigate my life. Here are a couple big things I learned my first year:

Be your own woman.

Don’t try to fit in. Find yourself first. Concentrate on your life before anyone elses.

Observe, don’t judge.

There are so many things to learn from the environment and people around if you just observe. We often have too many thoughts on a subject which leads us to overthink and over contemplate. Easy fix is to observe matter as it is, no need to clutter your mind with unnessesary thoughts.

Do things for you.

Take charge of your life. Don’t wait for anyone to give you motivation.

Seize opportunities.

By the end of first year, I realized no one is going to hand things to you. I learned I had to put myself out there. I had to ask for opportunites and get them myself.

First year can be tough because college is a new experience you are navigating new waters. You’ll learn more about your strengths and weaknesses and even find other people to share your experiences with. There is so much more life to experience I can’t wait for three more years!
