Attending a small, private high school made the dating pool very limited. You met some cute guys and you met some nice guys, but the ones who were actually interesting to you were very close friends and basically your brothers, thus labeling them as off limits. Friendship comes first right?

I always imagined what it would be like when I left for college and headed out into the  “real world” where there were tons of worthy bachelors waiting for my arrival. I think I’m a pretty great catch – I text back fast, brush my teeth at least three times a day and I can make a bomb PB&J. Communication skills, good hygiene and slightly above average sandwich making skills: what more could a guy ask for?

Well, here I am in my second year of college and has my knight in shining armor showed up at my doorsteps yet? Nope. Not at all. The only guy showing up at my apartment door is Jimmy. As in, Jimmy Johns. Pretty darn close to love though, I must say. At first I will admit that I was disappointed when I didn’t have texts after texts coming through asking me on hot dates downtown (classy), but eventually I started to like the idea of being single in college and here’s why:

  1. I can focus more on my grades. After all, isn’t that what we’re at college for anyhow? Surely it isn’t for the football games or the parties – nope, it’s for the GPA and diploma.
  2. I can strengthen my friendships. “Boys will break your heart, but a friendship will last forever.” True, if you work on developing these relationships. Ladies, you don’t need a man! Grab your gal pals and have a ladies night. Vent about the male population and eat ice cream, I promise it’ll make you feel better.
  3. I can ultimately focus on becoming the best possible version of me. I’m talking about all aspects here: spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. When I do meet the man of my dreams, Lord willing that day ever comes, I want to be the best version of me for him. Yah girl is gonna be A1.

The list could go on and on for why I think being single is a good idea. Other reasons include: not having to buy gifts on holidays, not having to look cute most days of the week and, most importantly, not having a significant other means having more time to devote to another responsibility – such as an animal, such as my cat. She snuggles with me at night and loves on me simply for feeding her. Who needs a guy? Not this girl. Well, at least not now anyway. Maybe when I actually enter into the real “real world” I’ll run into a nice fella. And who knows, maybe, just maybe, his name will be Jimmy.
