5 Things You Should Know Before Getting a Dog

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

1. They require SO MUCH attention

I’ve had pets my entire life. Granted, they were family pets, so I wasn’t the only one responsible for them. When I got my puppy, I was shocked at how much you have to watch them. That sounds kind of stupid, but you really don’t think about how much attention they require when you’re in a house full of people.

2. They are not easy to potty train

Maybe this is because I’ve never been the only person potty training the dog, but this puppy is a stubborn one. She doesn’t care that if she potties in the house that she goes in timeout. She doesn’t care that she gets treats when she goes a full day without an accident. She doesn’t care about anything except what she wants to do.

3. They will literally eat anything

I thought I had a pretty clean apartment. I didn’t vacuum everyday, but I definitely keep the trash picked up. I swear my puppy makes things that I don’t want her to eat out of thin air. I can literally have vacuumed 20 minutes before, and I look over and she’ll be chewing on some paper.

4. You can get tired of snuggles

I know this may be hard to believe, but if I’ve spent the whole day playing with and snuggling her, all I want when I go to bed is to be left alone. Of course she can’t do that. She wants to jump in my chest and lick my face and run around the bed and catapult herself on top of me. It’s cute for about 5 minutes, but then I’m ready to go to bed.

5. You didn’t realize you could love something as much as you love your new pet

I literally did not think it was humanly possible to love her as much as I do. I cannot even explain how obsessed I am with my dog. She’s literally all I talk about, and she’s always on my mind. I love her so much that it actually causes me physical pain. She’s a literal angel.
