10 Things Cat People Are Sick Of Hearing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

“Do you have any pets?”

“Yeah! I have a cat.”

This usually is the beginning of the end of a productive conversation for cat people. Cat people are constantly told other people’s prejudgments about their precious feline companions. We love our furry friends just like you love yours. Wouldn’t you hate constantly hearing negative things about your best friend? Well, we do too! Here are just a few (incorrect) things cat people hear on the reg:

1. “Cats are no fun”

Fake news.

2. “Cats aren’t capable of love like dogs are”

Correction: Cats are a different species of animal so they show affection differently than dogs. Duh.

3. “Cats can’t protect you”

I’ll just leave these links here for educational purposes:

4. “Oh, you like cats? You must be a crazy cat lady.”

Yes. I suppose you could say I’m crazy about cats and also a female. Got a problem with that?

5. “But they poop in your house. That’s disgusting.”

I’m confused. Like, I poop in my house. Where do you poop?

6. “You can’t have a relationship with a cat like you can with a dog”

I don’t know what relationship you have with your dog, but the relationships I have with my cats could honestly be turned into a major motion picture.

7. “Cats don’t show emotion”

Oh please. Say that again once my cat and I are done laughing at you.

8. “Cats are mean”

Maybe they’re only mean to you because they sense your negativity.

9. “Cats aren’t that smart”

Is it their self-sufficiency or their superior intelligence that leads you to this conclusion?

10. “Losing a cat isn’t the same as losing a dog”

I was told this when I lost my best friend of 16 years. Don’t judge the companionship someone had with their animal just because their animal wasn’t the same one you had.

Cats are the purr-fect choice of furry friend for many people. They’re small, fluffy, and basically miniature lions and tigers. What’s not to love? And let’s be real. Not every animal has had its own hit Broadway musical. But if cats aren’t the right fit for you, don’t let it be known every time we try to mention our fur babies. If you don’t see the value in loving a cat, ’tis your loss.

Writing. Living. Loving. Laughing. Eating.
