You cannot put a title to him, he does so many things: Tommy Wright

If you don’t know who Tommy Wright is, do you even go to Eckerd?! For those of you that don’t know, he’s currently a sophomore here at Eckerd College.  Surprisingly, Eckerd wasn’t even on Tommy’s lists of colleges at first. So why did Tommy come to Eckerd? Well, he originally heard about it from his older sister Emily Wright. She is an Eckerd alumnus that some of you might know from the Admissions Office. She worked as an admissions counselor until just recently. What also drew Tommy to Eckerd were the endless opportunities that the college had to offer him.  Plus he already knew some people through his sister. Tommy knew that he definitely wanted to get involved as much as he could. The small Eckerd Community is ideal for students looking to get involved even as a freshman. His first year here at Eckerd, he was involved in a research project with a professor. Tommy is majoring in Psychology. He hopes to go into human development to work with families or couples that have problems that deal with the LGBT community.

As stated, Tommy is an active member of the Eckerd Community. He is a Student Ambassador and a Resident Advisor. Lots of responsibilities come with being a Resident Advisor. Tommy believes the biggest responsibility is creating the community atmosphere. He wants to make sure that everyone knows each other to provide a home-like feeling. People should feel comfortable and accepted in the dorm. There are, of course, the more routine duties of being a Resident Advisor such as doing rounds, being apart of RA staff, and attending meetings every Wednesday. Tommy advises new Resident Advisors to be very specific on your rules of the house especially at your first dorm meeting. You need to make sure they know what you want and don’t want in the house.

As a Student Ambassador, Tommy helps a lot with the Explore Eckerd Weekends. His favorite part of EEC days is watching the prospective students come in and talking to them. He thinks that they are so fun and interesting. Tommy advises prospective students to go and talk to the students! We don’t bite! When I asked Tommy what he would tell someone who is on the fence about coming to Eckerd, he simply said that it really depends on why they are unsure. He emphasized that Eckerd College is a small school and students have the opportunity to get involved. If you don’t like something, you have the ability to make a change. Tommy wants to wish them the best of luck!

He also is a member of the Tritones and Cross-fit. When I asked Tommy what his favorite song to perform with the Tritones, it was hard for him to pick just one.  Last year he loved performing “Settle Down”. He also really enjoys performing “Breeze Blocks”, because he has a solo. This gives him the chance to have fun with adlibs. Tommy will be acting as a facilitator for Sexual Assault Bystander Campaign that is being held Tuesday April 7th.

His favorite thing to do at Eckerd is go down to the waterfront. He enjoys going kayaking through the mangroves. If you haven’t done it yet, you should definitely try it!

Tommy wants to study aboard for sure, but not for a whole semester. He wants to travel to Spain hopefully next Winter Term, go on a spring break trip, and take a spring into summer course that goes some place in China! He is currently learning Chinese and wants to get involved in a program in China for environmental research. Tommy’s summer plans might include taking a social psych class and visiting with one of his friends from NJ. He will be back early again for Autumn Term!
