Real Live College Guy: Advice for Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

Whether you’re single and ready to mingle, in a long-term relationship, or just starting out, Eckerd’s Real Live College Guy will be bringing advice and commentary from a guy’s perspective on everything from snap chat savvy flirting to friends with benefits and will even be answering questions. To have your question answered by our Real Live College Guy, write it in a comment below.

Well it’s about that time of year again, Valentine’s Day. Flatout, it is not on the top of our favorite holiday list. The top spots are reserved for holidays that we can eat as much as we want, there is booze involved and may have a gift exchange involved. This is no secret, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t care about the one that we’re with. I personally love to take someone out to a nice dinner or give a gift for no reason. It’s the lack of spontaneity that surrounds the day and the pressure to try to make the day special that lands Valentine’s Day on our low priorities list.

I’m going to let you in on another secret now. Well, it’s not really a secret, but guys don’t know what’s going on in your mind. We think we have a pretty good idea, but then you throw a curveball and we land on our asses. You know exactly what you want and you have expectations. Odds are, unless you tell us we won’t live up to them and where’s the fun in that?  It just doesn’t add up in my book.

So here’s where the challenge comes in: take control of your Valentine’s Day this year. Like I said, you know what you want, so make a plan and enjoy yourself.  I always hear that girls love guys that take control and make decisions. Well guess what, so do we. We’re relatively open minded and will probably be willing to do most activities that you have planned–and if you’ve been with this person long enough, you probably know what they enjoy as well.

As for these new relationships, same advice but tone it down a bit.  It’s awkward  when Valentine’s Day rolls around and you’re still in the early stages of dating. Make it fun and seem like any other day. There’s no need to go all out. Keep it simple or you just might scare him off…or leave him looking like a deer in headlights.

As for the single ones out there, now is the time to take a risk and go up to that person who you have had your eye on since the Toga Party. I told the new relationships to keep it simple, but for you, keep it simpler. Don’t leave campus, find something to do at this magical place we call Eckerd. Share a six pack on south beach, watch a movie, get creative but keep it cool. It could lead to something in the future, or you may never want to have to talk to the kid again, but at least you know. Put yourself out there, single guys love girls that make decisions.

The day is inevitable. Hallmark has a monopoly on it for the rest of our lives. But, from a guy whose favorite Valentine’s Days consisted of loading up on red heart lollipops in elementary school, take my advice with a grain of salt.

A Lilly loving, pearl wearing, history buff from Long Island, NY, Elizabeth Tomaselli is a Political Science and Journalism major minoring in Marine Science and Italian at Eckerd College. When she's not teaching aerobics and pilates or editing the school newspaper, you can find her hosting Gossip Girl premiere parties or tanning on the dock with her Beta girls. She is a self-professed pink lover with a striking ability to predict storylines in movies and TV shows. Aside from her adoration for Blair Waldorf and Jackie O, Liz enjoys playing tennis, dancing, and participating in family croquet tournaments at the little yellow house on Luther Place. Sometimes called the energizer bunny, she can function on little sleep, however, often requires coffee and Light & Fit yogurt to stay productive. With a big smile and curly brown hair, this senior plans to take over the world, one expensive shoe at a time.
