How to Style Up a Basic Winter Sweater

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

Sweater weather is slowly approaching in our usual warm and sunny Florida. Sweaters are definitely fall and winter clothing essentials. If you need a little help in trying to spice up your cute sweater, here are a few ways to transform a casual and cozy sweater into and stylish and chic show stopper.

1. Statement Jewelry

Statement jewelry never fails to make an impact on any outfit. Statement jewelry can range from bold chunky necklaces to studded bracelets. Theses accessories can add a little flare and personality to an otherwise bland sweater and outfit. If you have a sweater that is covered in funky patterns and colors, try to play and experiment with jewelry of varied colors and shapes. Stepping out of your closet comfort zone can jet set your style into a whole new dimension. A little tip for experimenting with different jewelry colors is try to find a color in your sweater that is shown the least, and wear the jewelry that matches that color. In this way, you will not have to worry about wearing too much of one color and looking too loud. This can also apply with other accessories like shoes, purses, and hats.

2. Layering

Layering is the easiest way to go from casual to chic. Since our temperatures don’t get too low in the winter, layering does not solely involve heavy coats or jackets. A simple sweater cardigan will be just enough to keep you warm outside when it’s cold. It is also easy to take off when the weather begins to heat up in the afternoon. This can also be your time to experiment with lengths and textures of the clothes you are layering. If you have low waist sweaters, try wearing an extra-long cardigan that goes down past your thigh. Long sweater cardigans are like huge blankets that you can wear at all times of the day. It’s a cozy and tasteful way to vamp up your winter style.

3. Hats

This season hats and beanies are very popular. Like I mentioned earlier in the Statement Jewelry section, hats are a great accessory when playing and experimenting with colors. Depending on the hat, your outfit can be transformed from basic to a spunky stand out ensemble guaranteed to turn heads. Two examples of staple hats are beanies and wide brimmed hats. Beanies can make outfits more casual, while wide brimmed hats can add a sophisticated touch and free look to your outfit.
