Fun Ways to Reuse Coffee Grounds

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

If you’re as busy of a person as I am, then you are probably alive because of coffee. The only thing running through my body is caffeine, and I am not ashamed of it. But what do you do with all those coffee grounds that make the liquid of life? Instead of throwing them away- here are a few ways to reuse those coffee grounds:

  • Put them in your potted plant! Coffee grounds can be used to stabilize the pH level of the dirt and fertilizer- aiding the plants growth and the smell.
  • Sprinkle the grounds in your garbage can. Old coffee grounds actually help absorb the stronger and more undesirable odors. Tip: fill up a sock or old pantyhose with the grounds and place in the bottom of trashcan.
  • Make a body or face scrub. Combine coffee grounds, olive oil, and coconut oil to create a scrub that will get rid of dead skin cells and hydrate your skin for a fresh face and body.
  • Use after shampooing your hair. After you shampoo your hair, run the coffee grounds through your hair and rinse with cold water. It gives your clean hair a nice and natural shine.
  • Create a shoe deodorizer. Sprinkle some dry coffee grounds in your smelly shoes to absorb the odor. Let the grounds sit in the shoes overnight, and shake them out in the morning.
  • No Bake Energy Bites:

1 cup dry whole grain oatmeal

1/2 cup ground flaxseed

1.5 tbsps. Coffee grounds

1/2 cup creamy almond butter

1/4 cup of honey

1 tsp. vanilla

1/4 cup chocolate chips

1/4 cup dried cranberries

                        Directions

Stir your oatmeal, flaxseed, and coffee granules together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed, and then add your almond butter, honey, and vanilla. Once well-combined, fold in your chocolate chips and cranberries. Stir well!  Let chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.  Once chilled, roll into balls.

  • Create a Natural Flea Repellent. After shampooing you furry friend, run the used coffee grounds through the fur. As you rinse away the grounds, you rinse away the fleas and create barrier against future fur critters.

These are just a few of the uses that I have personally been able to try out and actually work! Have fun experimenting with all the amazing uses coffee has to offer.
