Eckerd Says Relax: How to De-Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

“OH DEAR GOD THAT PAPER’S DUE TOMORROW MORNING!” Fwoosh! Covers hit the ground, books snatched up, door slams as you make a break for the library at the quality hour of one in the morning. Just another minor heart attack in your packed week, and that’s just Sunday night.

College is a lot to handle, no matter how organized or scatterbrained you are. We’re all busy girls, we’ve barely got time to squeeze in all of our homework and extra activities, much less make time for ourselves. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of small “bliss breaks” you can insert into your day to maintain your sanity.

Paint your nails: Take half an hour to pretty-up your fingers and toes. You’ll get to do nothing but sit and relax for a few minutes while they dry, and you’ll look more polished!

Take a walk on South Beach: Feeling the sand between your toes and the breeze in your face can be refreshing after being cooped up in your room or the library all day, and the sunsets here are fantastic.

Hit the gym: Even if you don’t have more than half an hour to spare, a few minutes on the elliptical or treadmill will help release endorphins to make you feel good, and you’ll get a bangin’ body out of it.

Ride a yellow bike around campus: Eckerd’s a beautiful campus – you won’t have to ride far to see that. Ride your bike to the front of campus and back and let yourself take it all in before the library takes you in again.

Movie night: You might not have the time to sit down and watch a movie most week days, but think about popping in a favorite DVD at the end of a fun night on the weekend to unwind, or watch it in pieces throughout the week for study breaks!

Pub ice cream: There are a lot of delicious things at the Triton Pub, but one of the best secrets is its ice cream. Take a few minutes to grab a scoop and enjoy between classes. I highly recommend the Barefoot Brownie.

Take a kayak out to the sandbar: Eckerd has an extensive waterfront program and a spectacular waterfront to get out on. Take a kayak to the sandbar by the mangroves and get your tan on!

Secret garden: A well-kept secret is the garden behind the pool. You can find the entrance hidden by trees between the far gate of the pool and the locker room structure. Take a few minutes to explore, or do homework at the picnic table there!

Hammock-happy: Take a nap in one of the hammock’s on South Beach, or bring your homework!

Stargaze: On a clear night, grab a blanket and head to Kappa Field to watch the stars for a few minutes. Bring a friend to join in!

Some girls have all the fun; Devon Elizabeth Williams happens to be one of them. A carb loving, liberal hailing from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Devon is a senior at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida pursuing a  major in Political Science with a double minor in Journalism and International Relations. After spending January 2011 in an intensive Winter Term program at the United Nations in New York, Devon realized that taking over the world will be more difficult than anticipated, but nothing that a vivacious red head in stilettos can’t handle. In her free time Devon is a bartending beauty queen who has a soft spot for blueberry pie, Broadway and the scheming antics of Blair Waldorf. When she’s not paddle boarding at the waterfront or laying out on Eckerd’s private South Beach you can find Devon singing in the alto section of the concert choir. At the end of the day Devon is thankful for Newport, RI, her family, Sadie the black lab, Paul Mitchell, her girlfriends, Cheetah, and rhinestones.
