Brianna Dickinson is Making Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

Chances are you probably know Brianna Dickinson, if not by name then by her overt friendliness and beaming smile. She is often seen in the pub or on the bench outside Beta with a cup of coffee or tea reading. She is never afraid to start a conversation with a stranger and make a new friend. She also plays a pretty mean game of “Just Dance” if I do say so myself.

Tell us about yourself—where are you from, what do you study, and what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
“I’m from Atlanta, Georgia. I’m majoring in International Relations and Global Affairs and double minoring in Sociology and Spanish. I enjoy listening to music, making new friends and laughing.

What organizations are you involved in on campus?
“Head Chair of Colleges Against Cancer, Co-President of Young Democrats, Band, on the board for Student Ambassadors, and three on campus jobs: Receptionist, Student Ambassador and Student Interviewer. I am also co-leading a spring break trip to New Orleans.”

Out of all of the things your involved in which is most rewarding and why?
“Colleges Against Cancer because it requires a lot of work, organizing big events and trying to get people involved. It’s hard because you also have to make it fun. You’re also dealing with an emotional matter so it involves a little bit of everything.”

What prompted you to start the Young Democrats?
“Me and my friend Veronica were discussing how there should be equal political views and awareness on campus. We thought is would be a great idea to have a group that can respectfully discuss democratic views and what’s going on in the world.”

What will your Spring Break trip entail?
“Stephanie and I intend on learning about the effects of the devastating hurricane Katrina. We plan to help rebuild houses and hopefully tutor kids because the schooling system has significantly declined. We want to experience ‘Nola’ culture including Cajun food, amazing music and some of the friendliest people ever.”

Being so motivated and driven now must mean you have big plans for the future. What are some of them?
“Right after college I want to join AmeriCorps to train for the Peace Corps. I ultimately want to join the Peace Corps in a Latin American country and hopefully join or create an International NGO for peace and human rights.”

You’re so busy, what do you do to escape and relax?
“I hang out with friends, talking/being with family, go out to dinner, reading on the beach, playing ukulele on kappa field, screaming in support of my favorite football team: Steelers, traveling, dancing, yoga, meditation, listen to music and pray.

Do you have a quote or mantra to live by?
“Psalm 118:24, ‘This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.’”

If you could be stranded on an aquaglide with anyone, who would it be?
“First of all, why would I be on an aquaglide?! Really?”

If you could be stranded on a hammock with anyone, who would it be?
“Bruno Mars so he can sing to me and teach me how to play guitar or comedian Kevin Hart so he can make me laugh.”

If you could describe yourself in one song, what would it be?
“Oh Lord, what’s the most awkward song you know? “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars, though there are some parts that don’t apply to women.”

Some girls have all the fun; Devon Elizabeth Williams happens to be one of them. A carb loving, liberal hailing from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Devon is a senior at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida pursuing a  major in Political Science with a double minor in Journalism and International Relations. After spending January 2011 in an intensive Winter Term program at the United Nations in New York, Devon realized that taking over the world will be more difficult than anticipated, but nothing that a vivacious red head in stilettos can’t handle. In her free time Devon is a bartending beauty queen who has a soft spot for blueberry pie, Broadway and the scheming antics of Blair Waldorf. When she’s not paddle boarding at the waterfront or laying out on Eckerd’s private South Beach you can find Devon singing in the alto section of the concert choir. At the end of the day Devon is thankful for Newport, RI, her family, Sadie the black lab, Paul Mitchell, her girlfriends, Cheetah, and rhinestones.
