Review: Flat White’s new cocktail bar

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

While many of us were away for the Easter holidays, a very exciting development took place in the Durham evening ents scene. With only a couple of sneaky Instagram posts to warn us, Flat White Kitchen opened a bar on the 6th April. Once we’d discovered this fab news, the group conclusion was a) RIP student budget but also b) yay! happy days! One of the girls had just finished a big research project and hadn’t celebrated her birthday, so we thought we may as well use the occasion to check it out!

Called Flat White Basement and open from 6-10pm every Thursday – Saturday, this cute and trendy little bar can be found beneath Flat White Kitchen. Our table was outside in the beer garden: one of two large tables on the upper level, the rest being coffee tables on the lower level. While it kinda looks down onto the Klute smoking area, luckily this isn’t really visible – most of the view is of trees, Elvet Bridge and the river. It’s fairly small inside with standing room only around the bar, but the low ceiling and window with plant pots hanging gives it a homely atmosphere. This adundant vegetation makes it very summery, and so promises be perf for post-exams fun times!

On the menu is a traditional selection of cocktails, beers and wines, and I believe they sell snacks like peanuts and crisps as well, which would defs come in handy for those feeling peckish. Between us we ordered Mojitos, Gin and Tonics (can confirm the tonic is Fentimans, so much excitement there), and an Old Fashioned. So 100% would recommend for an evening revision break, or a freedom celebration for the beginning of June, either way though – it’s well worth a visit.
