The first three weeks of term can be difficult. Lectures and library hours begin and summatives and seminars take over. After a long summer holiday, getting back into the swing of things can be tough!  And what better way to relax than a trip to the theatre? Here are Her Campus Durham’s top picks for November…

Daredevil Rides To Jarama

Clem “Daredevil” Beckett was a fabulous Spanish race car rider in the late 1920s.  He managed not only to break world records but played an essential role in struggling against fascist movements during the Spanish Civil War. In 1929 Beckett started to cooperate with other ‘speedway-famous’ sportsmen (Spencer “Smoky” Stratton and Jimmy Hindle) to open Sheffield’s first speedway track. Finally they succeeded – this track is still very popular. The play Daredevil Rides to Jarama by Neil Gore tells story about a brilliant racer, and a fighter for working-class rights. George Sinfield, the oldest friend of Clem Beckett, wrote: “Beneath his leather jacket beats a heart of gold. It was a heart that throbbed in rhythm with the struggle of the working people. When news of his death reached speedway fans, they saw their idol in a new role”. The play commemorates the sacrifice of Volunteer International Brigades.

Der Rosenkavalier

Der Rosenkavalier is full of intriguing and passionate relationships. The aristocratic Marschallinn begins an affair with young Count Octavian. When the aristocrat’s cousin happens to introduce the Count to young, pretty Sophie, they immediately fall in love, causing a string of comical reactions. A good play to watch if you happen to study German – all of the songs are performed in the original language. Comedy-meets-soap-opera, this play is a lot of fun!

The Rocky Horror Show

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancĂ©e Janet,  two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank ‘n’ Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit a college professor. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits.  Featuring all of its famous musical classics, including Science Fiction/Double Feature, Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and of course, the classic floor filler The Time Warp.
