The story is about Jack Skellington, ‘the Pumpkin King’. He lives in Halloweentown, which is inhabited with monsters, vampires, zombies, ghosts, goblins and witches. Every year, Jack organises their annual Halloween holiday. However this year, he wants something different. One day, he is wandering in the woods and suddenly comes across a mysterious door with a painted Christmas tree on it. Opening it, the portal leads him to Christmastown! After seeing the town and experiencing the magic of Christmas, Jack wants to bring Christmas home… but that dream soon turns into nightmare.
The Nightmare before Christmas centers on the relationship between Jack and knitted puppet Sally, who is secretly in love with the Pumpkin King.
