I, an old and decrepit third year, still feel overwhelmed by what Durham University has to offer, so I can only imagine the sense of confusion and awe Freshers must have felt as they shuffled round the seemingly never-ending supply of stalls at this year’s Fresher’s fair. But, never fear Fresh, for Her Campus is here! We have come up with a shortlist of societies you might like to know more about!

Ā

Durham Student Theatre (DST)

ā€˜O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo!’. Whether it’s opera or comedy, musicals or tragedies that you’re interested in, DST is the central hub for all your stage-related antics. Membership is Ā£10 for a year and Ā£25 for life. ClickĀ hereĀ for more information.

Nightline

For the good listeners among you, time to put those skills to work! Nightline offers a free, confidential service from 9pm to 7am every night of the University term. It is run by students, for students and is a great opportunity to learn new life skills. The first training weekend is the 18th and 19th of October and more information can be found here.

Quidditch

The Durham University Quidditch team (known as Durhamstrang) fulfils the hopes and dreams of all muggles who have ever dreamed of catching the golden snitch. OK, so there isn’t yet a spell available to make us fly, meaning you have to clutch a broom between your legs as you run around shooting quaffles through hoops, but it’s still a lot of fun. Definitely the club for the adventurous ones among our readers! Membership is Ā£10 for one year and Ā£25 for life. For more information click here.Ā

Purple Radio

Ever fancied hosting your own radio show? Well with Durham’s very own, student-run, radio station you can! Running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Purple Radio Membership is Ā£20 for the year and allows you to book a show slot. To start on your road to fame, visit theirĀ website to find out more!

Durham University Women in Business (DUWIB)

Offering great opportunities from grad schemes to inspirational talks by guest speakers, DUWIB is the perfect society for all your career needs. Membership is £1 for the year and you can find out more of what DUWIB have on offer here.

20 Minute Society

Describing itself as Durham’s most spontaneous society, where an individual receives a text with a time and place a mere 20 minutes before the start of meetings, this certainly lives up to it’s name. Her Campus is incredibly curious as to what is discussed at these on-impulse meetings. With that much secrecy and spontaneity it must be something along the lines of top-secret government plans. Why not join and find out? Membership is Ā£5 for the year with the promise of great prizes should you be the first to reach the mystery location! Follow this linkĀ to get involved!

Wine and Cheese

Start your Wednesday nights off in style with an unlimited supply of wine, cheese and engaging discussion. For a mere £20 for life or £10 for a year you can enjoy a wealth of wines all year round, click here to get yours now!

Caledonian

Nothing quite hits the spot like a bit of Scottish reeling! If, like me, you are a gym-o-phobic, this is a great way to work off all that wine and cheese you just had as well as to meet new friends. So people, don your kilts and get the bagpipes playing for one of Durham’s liveliest societies. Membership is Ā£15 for one year and Ā£25 for life and can be bought here.

Meditation

What with joining all these societies, going for coffees with friends, nights out at Klute, Uni life can get pretty hectic (and that’s before you even factor in your degree!). For relaxation techniques and a chance to unwind after a busy day playing Quidditch why not join the meditation society? Membership is Ā£3 for a year and Ā£5 for life. Click hereĀ for more information!

Her Campus

Last but by no means least! Her Campus is a great way to grow the budding journalist inside you. As well as writing, we hold social events and it’s a great way to meet new people! If you have an article idea or would like to write for us, email Serena at serenagosling@hercampus.com!
