Whilst reading various lists of various module choices for various subjects as research for writing this article, I found myself thinking on several occasions: why would anyone study that module? It got me thinking that there are so many more useful things we could be taught here at Durham, things that would make life so much easier and definitely more manageable.
Hatfield Imperialism: Tensions of an Empire
This twist on the well-known Level 1 History module would definitely fill a lecture theatre. Finally being able to understand why Hatfield believe they are the superpower of Durham and why they feel the need to condescend the rest of us âcoloniesâ with chants and sneers, are things almost everyone living past the New Inn are desperate to understand.
College Food: The Potato Wars
Lattice fries, curly fries, sweet potatoes, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and potato tots â just some of the types of potato the catering staff like to fatten up us livers-in with. Wouldnât you like someone to sit you down and give you explicit instructions on how to walk straight past those golden trays of delicious-ness to the salad bar? I thought so.
An Introduction to the Art of Gown-Wearing
For those of you at gown-donning colleges, youâll know what I mean when I talk of the first formal fear: how on earth do I make this gown look good? With 1980s shoulder pads and bat wings that insist on falling in your soup constantly, please could someone just tell us how to make these look less Gaga and more Granger?
The Biology of Klute
Without going into too much graphic detail, it is highly probable that the cotton swap samples you could collect in Klute would make for the most hideous and skin crawling petri dishes you would ever wish (or dread) to see under a microscope in your academic career. Molecules and Cells would never be the same again.
Martian Landscapes: A Guide to Queenâs Campus, Stockton
Making this third year elective module more relevant to us earthlings could be the best decision the Geography Department will ever make. Ever wanted to know what life is really like on the other side? Ever wanted to go and have a look for yourself but youâve not wanted to venture into the wilderness without a guide? This module could definitely be for you.Â
