10 Ways You Know You’re A Law Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

1. You’ve Spent More Money On Textbooks Than Life’s Necessities.

You’ve bought all your textbooks because your library is well aware of how expensive they are and thus only carry two copies. You’re also painfully aware how empty your law degree would be without them.

2.  You Learn About The Stupid Things People Can Do

I don’t mean this in the sense that everyone is stupid, but rather the people you encounter in law school cases are stupid. Some of the cases involve accidental murder by Russian roulette or drunkenly flying a plane and inevitably crashing it.

Basically, you start to feel a lot better about your life.

3. You’re 97% Sure That After Taking Criminal Law, You Can Get Away With Murder.

After binge-watching “How to Get Away with Murder” you’re convinced it’s a reflection of your life, and that you’re basically invincible.

4. You Feel All Powerful When You Sign Your House’s Contract After Studying Land Law.

When secretly on the inside you’re just happy you know the difference between leasehold and freehold in the contract.

5. Sometimes You Wonder If You’ve Made The Biggest Mistake Of Your Life.

At times the degree becomes so grueling, you end up questioning everything. Between the massive amounts of reading, and the interrogation-like tutorials and essays on subjects you don’t even remember covering, it becomes hard to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel.

6. The Scenarios Given For Problem Questions Are The Best Works Of Fiction You’ve Read In Weeks.

When you have no time for anything else, these problem questions become an entertaining haven from the massive amounts of work you have ahead of you.

7. You’ve Learnt How To Work Due To The Fear Of Interrogation.

When you haven’t prepared and the brutal tutors decide to pick on you, it’s the most terrifying experience of your life. That kind of attention is never appreciated.

8. You Often Attempt To Give Legal Advice To Your Friends.

But it becomes blatantly obvious you don’t actually know what you’re talking about and your credibility as the lawyer among your friends is shot.

9. A 1500-2000 Word Limit Is Either A Blessing Or A Curse.

This depends so much on the module. For me, getting to 1500 words in land law was almost impossible but in Public International Law was the exact opposite.

10. At The End Of The Day, Though It’s Grueling And Tough, You Know It’s Secretly Incredibly Interesting And You Relish The Challenge.

Durham Law School Finalist
I am currently in my final year of studying English Literature at Durham University, England. I am hoping to become a journalist in the future, but in the mean time, I enjoy cheerleading, fashion and travelling, and of course, being the editor of Durham's Her Campus!
