Why I’m Thankful for Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

This time of year often provokes people to question what they are thankful for. For some, good health tops their list. For others, it’s good fortune. For many more, it’s good friends and family. For me, it’s Thanksgiving. Thankful for Thanksgiving? Sounds crazy, right? Take a look at my reasons below, and you might just find that you’re thankful for Thanksgiving, too!

1.   Perhaps the most obvious for us students: Thanksgiving break

After a long few months of classes with few vacations, Thanksgiving break marks the beginning of a vacation-filled period of school (or should it be a school-filled period of vacation?). Regardless, it’s a great feeling to know that I’ll only have to go another couple weeks before I can return home to the comfort of my own room, my mom’s cooking, and my puppy.

2.   The super sales at stores

While I’m not crazy enough to hit the mall on Black Friday, I do enjoy the pre- and post-Thanksgiving sales. For all of those readers getting ready to brave the stores this weekend, best of luck with your shopping endeavors (and if you happen to see something cute, can you grab one in my size, too?).

3.   Food

Does this one really require an explanation? Absolutely nothing can top a holiday that is completely focused on food. If, for some strange reason, your Thanksgiving isn’t centered on food, you’re probably doing it wrong.

4.   Time to reflect on what I’m thankful for

In all seriousness, Thanksgiving is a time for us to slow down from the chaos of our busy lives and reflect on what we are thankful for.  Without this special holiday, it’s easy to forget how lucky and blessed we all are. So whatever tops your list this Thanksgiving, I hope you have a safe and happy holiday!

As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
