What to Wear to a Christmas Theme Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

We’ve entered into the final stretch of the first semester. The next couple weeks will be filled with frantic studying, essay writing and late nights in the library. Luckily, this period of stress and misery overlaps with the holidays, which we all know is the happiest time of the year. In college, the holidays mean theme parties and specifically, tacky Christmas parties. No outfit is “too much” for a tacky Christmas party in college. You know that elementary school teacher you had who wore giant reindeer sweaters and jingle bell earrings all through December? Channel her in when you pick out your party outfit this year. You can be serious and reserved in the library, but Christmas parties are all about fun, enthusiasm, and holiday spirit. Here are some crucial components for the perfect Christmas themed party outfit.

The Sweater

Although I’ve seen some pretty great alternatives to this holiday party staple (red and green striped onesies, full Santa outfits), you really can’t go wrong with a good tacky Christmas sweater. When it comes to these sweaters, the more and overdone the better. Think bells, reindeer, snowflakes, and Santa Claus, preferably all together. Christmas sweaters aren’t very hard to find, and they are usually pretty inexpensive. If you don’t have time for a run to Target, Wal-Mart or another department store, you can easily buy one online. Based on my Google search for “ugly Christmas sweaters” selling these sweaters is a pretty big business!

Socks

When I think of Christmas at home, I think of being cozy and snuggled up in front of a fire. In this vision, which sustains me through the agony of finals season, I see myself wearing really comfy socks. A good pair of cozy wintery socks is a perfect addition to any Christmas themed party outfit. At this time of year, it’s easy to find high, striped red and green socks, or socks with Christmas decorations.  The good thing about Christmas socks is that you can wear them with boots even when you aren’t at a party, and be secretly festive any time you want.

Accessories

As far as accessories go for tacky Christmas parties, you really can’t overdo it. Earrings shaped like Christmas trees, jingle bells or reindeer are great additions to an outfit. If you think your sweater isn’t quite as festive as it could be, add a big red bow, or a string of tinsel around your neck. And don’t forget to wear something on your head – Santa hats and antlers are both great options.

Creating your Christmas themed party outfit should be fun. The guidelines are simple, and there’s really no way to overdo it. Let your outfit reflect how excited you actually are for the holidays, and you really can’t go wrong!
