Midterm season. Ugh. While we didn’t have time to cook a delicious meal or a tasty treat, we did have time to steal away from campus for a little family time. We decided to take a break at Toast, a paninoteca (yep, that’s a word… it just means they make paninis!) on Main Street. It only took us a few minutes to get there and the service was pretty quick, so it was the perfect study break without eating up too much of our time!

The menu is so tasty. While it’s limited to paninis, cold sandwiches, bruschetta and crostinis, the sandwich combinations are absolutely to die for. It’s all in the name – their menu is based on the theme of toasty bread.

We placed our orders and took a seat in this cute and quaint sandwich cafe. We loved the decor, especially the big windows that let a lot of light in, which was great on such a beautiful day! Our stomachs were grumbling (1:30 is just too late for lunch when you haven’t had breakfast) so we got a dark chocolate cherry biscotti to hold us over. Don’t ever let anyone tell you not to have dessert first – this biscotti was to die for. The chewy cherries and rich dark chocolate almost had us ordering another one, and why not at only $1?

We all opted for paninis with a side of soup – incredibly filling and probably could have stretched to 2 meals, but we just couldn’t stop eating them! We ordered the tuscan kale with hot pickled peppers (heavy on the hot, jeeeez!), the portobello and fontini, and the prosciutto and mozzarella paninis. They were so scrumptious and perfectly toasted. The homemade soups were hearty and flavorful, and partnered so well with the paninis!

In a nutshell: great location, great decor, great service, great food, and all at a fair price (the paninis are only $6.50 and we added the soup for $2). I don’t think it’ll be too long before we’re back for another lunch break, but maybe we’ll eat a little earlier next time!
